Air Force Deployed Gift History in Mattoon, Illinois began on December 4th, 1951 with the deployment of the 929th Airlift Squadron. The squadron was then reassigned to the 372d Airlift Wing which was activated on October 1st, 1952. The 372d Airlift Wing's mission is to provide airlift for military and civil missions throughout Illinois. On November 14th, 1954, the 374th Airlift Squadron was activated and became part of the 372d wing. In 1957, a new hangar was built at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base which allowed for more storage and operation of transport planes. In 1959 a new plant was also built at Wright-Patterson AFB which would become known as "Mattoon Aircraft Plant". This plant would be used to produce America's first jet aircraft and help support NATO during the Cold War. In 1961 a new airport opened in Mattoon called "Mattoon Municipal Airport". This airport would serve as home to both J-3s (Joint Chiefs of Staff) as well as civilian flights throughout Illinois. On February 15th, 1966, an F-100A Super Sabre jet fighter plane arrived from United States Air Forces Europe (USAF EF-111 Aardeens) and served as the first airplane brought into service at Mattoon Municipal Airport. The 371st Fighter Squadron joined the 373d wing in 1966 and soon became one of its primary flying assets. During this time period another new hangar was built at Wright-Patterson AFB which would become known as "Wright Patterson Annex". This annex housed three squadrons - 376th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS), 377th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS), 378th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (TRS). In 1970 two additional squadrons were added to the 373d wing - 379th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS) and 380th Tactical Fighter Squadron (TFS). These squadrons were tasked with providing overwatch for USAF strategic bombers over against North Vietnam during Operation Rolling Thunder。Following World War II ended on September 2nd, 1945 American forces left Germany behind without any honors or equipment thanks to Truman’s Executive Order 9066 . Mattoon is a small town in the east side of Illinois. The population was 5,439 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Peoria–Moline–Bloomington metropolitan area. Mattoon is located on the north-central border of Cook County and La Salle County. The first European to visit Mattoon was Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette in 1679. He named it after his mentor, Marquette's friend and fellow missionary, John Montfort. Mattoon became a post office in 1839 and a county seat in 1856. The courthouse burned down in 1906 but was rebuilt with new materials and reopened in 1909 as the Courthouse Annex Building. In 1907, Mattoon also became home to what is now known as "The United Methodist Church." In 1916, mayor Harry Sargeant proposed that the name for what then consisted only of a few houses be changed to "Mattoon." At that time, there were about 350 people living in Mattoon. When it passed muster by both local residents and the state legislature, it was made an official city name on December 12, 1916. On September 11th 1944 during World War II, Japanese forces bombed downtown Mattoon while American troops were inside their barracks nearby; this bombing killed 43 civilians including six children ages 4 to 10 years old who were inside their house at 201 N State Street when they were targeted by bombs that went off minutes after they entered their home from playing outside (the house still stands). Aftermath of WWII saw many changes take place within Mattoon such as loss of businesses due to lack of trade; however most notably an increase in population growth which has resulteded in more needs being met by government services like police officers and firefighters which have led to increased taxes paid by citizens making up for decreased property values throughout much of town because much less tax revenue has been generated from properties brought into compliance with zoning ordinances over recent decades - culminating with annexation by neighboring Bloomington following suit). Airwolf effectively ended combat aviation as we know it within the USAF; however its legacy lives on through other programs such as Cooperative Combat Aviation and Joint Strike Fighter development being conducted by Lockheed Martin Corporation (LMT).
