That same year, The First National Bank of Rockford began offering its own brand of espresso beverages. In 1918, the first grocery store in town opened and sold general merchandise as well as coffee and pastries from their bakery on Third Street. In 1927, two brothers named Harry and Sam Levy opened a drive-in movie theater called the Mayfair Drive-In on Elm Street near Michigan Avenue. The Levinys were the only people to operate a drive-in theater in central Illinois until it closed down in 1971. Rockford is a city in the Illinois region of the United States. The population was 66,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kane County. Rockford is named after General George Washington's army officer and scout, Colonel John Hawkins Rockford. The first permanent settler in what would become Rockford was William Henniker, who arrived in 1811. In 1813, James Kempton founded the village of Buttstown on land that he had bought from Henniker. In 1834, Price Dixon purchased 5000 acres (2 km²) east of downtown from Henniker for $10 per acre ($4 million today). Dixon renamed it "Dixonville" after himself and his wife Lucy Boggs Dixon. In 1835, Thomas King organized a group of men to purchase 1/5 mile (0.8 km²) of land north of downtown from Price Dixon for $20 per acre ($640,000 today). This area became known as "King's Addition". The town site was surveyed in 1836 by John Silliman and named after him – Silliman Heights or South Side Township. On July 20, 1840, when Illinois statehood was granted to the United States, Springfield was chosen as its capital; however, because Chicago had been established as the new national capital two years earlier and because much business activity took place within what would become Cook County (including parts of Kane County), Rockford was chosen to serve as both federal and local courthouse during this time period. In 1847-48 Samuel Morse laid out a townsite on land adjacent to the current site of City Hall which he called Dearborn Park; however this too failed to gain popular support so it reverted back to its original name – City Hall Village until it again supplanted Dearborn Park in 1870 when Dearborn Park changed hands again due to an increased population density which resulted from railroad construction nearby including State Street Bridge over Sangamon River across from City Hall which had been completed in1849 by Indiana congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr., future first Ulysses S Grant– although some claims say that Songbird’s Nest may have been built concurrently with State Street Bridge if not directly related thereto

By 1870, Rockford had become one of the largest cities on the continent. In 1910, it became part of the new United States after President William McKinley signed a bill providing for its incorporation into that country. During World War II, Rockford played a significant role as both an industrial center and military base due to its location within easy range of missiles being developed by American Aircraft Corporation (AAC) at their facility on Old Military Road downtown. This commitment helped lead to rapid growth during wartime: by 1945, Rockford's population had reached 100,000 residents! However – like many other American cities – postwar growth stalled asafter-the-war demand for jobs faded away precipitously while prices for goods doubled or tripled overnight!
