The Navy has been deployed in many different ways throughout the years. From sending soldiers and Marines to fight in World War II, to being stationed in Illinois during the late 1800s, the Navy has always had a presence in Rockford. One of the most famous deployments of the Navy was during World War II. The USS Missouri was mobilized and sent to Japan to fight against Imperial Japan. This is also when Rockford first became known as an important naval base because of the large fleet that was stationed here. During peacetime, however, Rockford played a smaller role for the Navy. There were only two active Naval facilities here at this time- one was used for training sailors and marines, and another served as storage space for ships. However, after 9/11, things changed rapidly for Rockford residents. The Navy decided that they wanted their own permanent installation here in Rockford- something that hadn’t happened since 1945 when USS Ponce moved into this port city on Chicago’s West Side. The decision to build a navy installation here made perfect sense given all of the new technology we have today thanks to technology like Facebook and Twitter- both of which are based in Illinois! Today, there are more than 1,000 sailors and Marines stationed at Naval Base Illinois - making it one of NATO’s most heavily populated installations outside of Europe. In addition to providing training opportunities for our Sailors and Marines, Naval Base Illinois also provides much needed economic stability within our community by hosting businesses such as Boeing and Caterpillar while they are based here.
