The Taylorville Army National Guard's history in the state of Illinois dates back to 1868. The unit was organized as a regiment on November 5, 1868 under the command of Brigadier General John D. Forbes. On December 12, 1868, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Infantry Regiment and fought its first battle against Native Americans at Black Hawk Creek. In 1880, the regiment was re-designated the 3rd Infantry Regiment and served in Missouri during the American Civil War before returning to Illinois in 1865. The unit participated in numerous campaigns and battles throughout its history including Battle of Peoria (1865), Battle of Thompson’s Station (1870), Battle of Missionary Ridge (1871), Siege of Vicksburg (1871), and Battle of Perryville (1872). In 1886, after being stationed at Fort Dodge for three years, it returned home and joined Regular Army forces under General George McClellan where it served until World War I. After World War I ended, the battalion remained inactive until it reactivated on September 20th, 1923 as part of commands 10th Infantry Brigade Combat Team located at Camp Randall near Chicago. It served with this brigade untilactivated again on July 6th 1933 when it became part of command 9th Cavalry Brigade Combat Team located at Rock Island Arsenal near Chicago. It served with this brigade untilactivated again on January 29th 1944 when it became part of command 1st Armored Division located at Camp Shelby near Memphis Tennessee].
Taylorville is a small, unincorporated community in St. Clair County, Illinois, United States. It is located on the east side of the Illinois River near its confluence with the Des Plaines River. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Taylorville was founded in 1852 by fur traders and settlers from New England. It was named for John Taylor, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1853; it was renamed to Taylorville in 1907. In 1916, Taylorville became a town when it became part of the Chicago metropolitan area. In 1972, after years of debate and planning, Taylorville received city status. The name change came about because at that time most residents were still considered farmers or fishermen who used their homes as agricultural fields or fishing ponds rather than residence proper; as a result, many residents did not fully understand why they had been given this new title and some objected to it (eager for their old nickname). The mayor at that time said "There are more people living around here now than there were back when we changed our name." The growth of nearby Aurora has led to increased development along Highway 67 within town limits- including high-rise apartments on top of several small businesses- making it difficult for residents to maintain their independence from larger forces without sacrificing access to essential services such as water and transportation
