In 1898, Mr. Grieve passed away, but his legacy lives on through his son-in-law Milton Hershey who co-founded Hershey's Chocolate Factory in 1945. Taylorville is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois, located on the northwest side of the state. It is bordered by McDonough County to the south, Cook County to the east, and Kane County to the north. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Taylorville was James Hickey in 1819. He and his family lived on a farm near present-day Park Avenue and Main Street. In 1824, John Tolliver settled in what is now Taylorville. Tolliver built a log cabin near where Main Street intersects Park Avenue today. The first post office in Taylorville was established in 1829; it was called "Tolliver". In 1830, Isaac Stout moved from Kentucky to start a settlement around what is now West Side Road and First Street. In 1831, he named his community "Taylorville" after General David Hunter's headquarters during the War of 1812. At that time, Taylorville consisted of only two houses; it grew rapidly thereafter with settlers moving into the area from all over Illinois and neighboring states. By 1840, there were more than twenty families living in Taylorville. As early as 1840, there were efforts being made to organize an agricultural society so that farmers could better manage their land and improve their crops…. After some initial problems with dues collection and distribution due to lack of infrastructure at that time (the organization had no printing press), success ensued as members began sharing information about practices they had learned from experience….. In 1850/51 A W Latell organized a wagon train carrying wheat downriver from Galena Junction Dam through Rock Island River Valley for shipment across Iowa River…. [L]eaders migrating westward found many similar communities already organized along river banks; these included new settlements such as Kankakee (1850), Batavia (1851), Decatur (1852/53), Griggsburg (1855), Altona (1856) etc., most likely because navigation became easier following construction of canals connecting different parts of Illinois…." On April Fool's Day 1859,[1] citizens announced via proclamation that they would move out their stores onto large plots of land northeast of townlines if General William Tecumseh Sherman’s Union army failed to enter Chicago during its Invasion of Illinois Campaign on November 8th.[2] However cannonfire quickly forced them back inside their homes before anything could happen….. On May 1st 1861[3], skirmishes broke out outside town when Confederate forces attempted unsuccessfully to march into town disguised as Yankee soldiers…… Withdrawing Confederate forces discovered homemade cannons hidden among trees just outside town limits……A final attempt by Confederates on October 3rd resulted in one man dead and several injuries….. alarms went up throughout town when retreating Federals unwittingly trespassed upon private property belonging to citizens who had been using it for target practice…………On November 9th 1862 general movement started towards Springfield when Union cavalry unexpectedly encountered Confederate artillery pieces situated atop hills just southeast of Taylorsvil
