Tinley Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,853 at the 2010 census. Tinley Park is the second most populous township in Cook County and one of the five townships located in Chicago metropolitan area. Tinley Park was established as a post office on March 10, 1847. The township was named for Amos Tinley who donated land to the new municipality. The town of Tinley Park was originally two adjacent hamlets: West Town and East Town. In 1872, when it became part of the larger city of Chicago, West Town seceded from Tinley Park and became part of the new City of Chicago while East Town continued to be a part of Tinley Park. However, both townships were merged into one municipality on February 14, 1893 following an effort by Mayor John J. Cullerton to improve public transportation between those two townships and make them more interconnected with each other and with downtown Chicago via a single route. The first store in what is now Tinley Park originated as a general merchandise store called "The Post Office" on Green Street near North Avenue in Westtown (now Elmhurst). This store operated until 1865 when it moved across State Street to its current location at 222 Green Street which served as the first ever school building in what is now Tinney Park (now Addison). The next store built in what is now Tinney Park was called "The Academy". It opened in 1868 and remained open until 1908 when it closed because of lagging sales opportunities due to advancements made by automobiles which had replaced horse-drawn coaches as our primary means for getting around town. In 1912, Drury Wagon Works opened up shop inside tinkerer's alley off High School Avenue west of State Street; this shop would become known as Drury's Department Store until 1972 when ownership passed from Drury Wagon Works LLC to Sears Roebuck & Co., Incorporated (now Sears Holdings Corporation). At that time it became one of Sears' flagship stores across all Sears stores including those located within municipalities such as TinLEY PARK! In addition to their core line items such as appliances and furniture, Drury's also offered saddles/horses/carriages/etc., along with numerous other related products throughout its 345-year history! It wasn't until 1973 that Sears finally abandoned their policy where every department had its own roof top showroom; instead they began opening up model homes at various locations within their superstores which would become popularly known by shoppers as "Sears Lofts." Unfortunately due to economic conditions during the late 1970s through early 1980s era - experiencing rapid growth but also accompanied by increases in crime rates - many Sears Loft models were disposed or sold at auction off subsequent years leading up culminating with their closure back home permanently effective November 3rd 1984 after 54 years serving retail customers throughout Cook County! Today you can still find remnants from some dismantled Loft structures scattered about central west suburban Oak Lawn today... just don't try going into any particular floor or room! Though often thought about separately from one another –West Town Township & EastTown Township jointly formed tinLEY PARK on Feb 14 1893 following amalgamation efforts between both institutions- these two townships actually constituted only 1% (~6K residents) out of total population size for Cook County during 1890 Census… meaning even though both Township boundaries underwent major changes over that decade (& several annexations), they collectively didn’t experiencesignificant population growth (& shrinking tax base) unlike neighborhoods like Humboldt Grove & Woodlawn Estates which saw significant populaton growth (~10x) thanks largely to annexation by neighboring communities during that time period !
