The Dutch East India Company introduced coffee into their navy in 1595, which gave them an edge over their Spanish rivals in naval warfare (Norman). The Dutch were not alone in introducing coffee into different armies. England also enjoyed a taste for this stimulant beverage during the seventeenth century. A study by Nicholas-Jacques Conte found that “English troops had become quite addicted to Java” (Conte 176). English officers stationed overseas started bringing back large quantities of beans so that they could enjoy this unique flavor on return home. Coffee began being used as an energy source within armies at this time as well, allowing commanders to stay sharp during long campaigns (Fowler).
