Avon, Indiana is a small town in the rural region of central Indiana. The population was 1,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lafayette metropolitan area. Avon is located on State Street, about 7 miles (12 km) east of Lafayette and 16 miles (25 km) west of Evansville. The community was founded in 1824 by Abram Kincaid and his wife Anna Purdy Kincaid. Abram's brother-in-law, John Hargrave, donated land to the town for a courthouse and schoolhouse. The first post office opened in 1827. In 1851, avon became a station on the Indianapolis & Michigan Railway.
