Avon, Indiana is a small town in southwestern Indiana. The population of the town was 736 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. Avon was founded by John Avon in 1828 as a trading post on the confluence of the Grosse and Little rivers. The post served as a stop on stagecoach routes between Indianapolis and Chicago. In 1835, John's son-in-law, George Myron, built a log cabin near present day Avon on land he had acquired from an Indian chief. By 1840, George had purchased additional land to create what is now known as Myron Park. At that time it was one of only two towns in Hoosier County with a courthouse; both other towns were located in Indianapolis. The first court sessions were held at Myron Park on July 5th, 1840. In 1843, James Coyle became the first Mayor of Avon after being elected to that office by popular vote following his victory over incumbent Samuel Hocking in an election which included all but three of Hoosier County’s seventy-six voting precincts. The area around present day Avon became part of Terre Haute Township when it was organized under Section 10 of the Township Code of 1906. On January 1st 1907, Terre Haute discontinued its own government and merged into Avon Townships effective January 1st 1908
The town of Avon, Indiana was founded in 1812 by the merger of two other settlements, Westport and Northampton. The town was named for Jameson Avon, an influential local Republican Party fundraiser and member of the Indiana General Assembly.
