Bedford is a small town in Northwest Indiana, United States. The population was 2,822 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute, IN Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Bedford were farmers and their families who arrived in 1814 from Kentucky. The town was named for General George Washington Bedford, an officer in the Continental Army during the American Revolution. A post office was established in 1827, and by 1840 it had a population of about 100 people. In 1851, Bedford became a city when its residents ratified an act of the Indiana General Assembly creating it as a municipal district with voting rights and other powers like those of cities within local districts. As a city, Bedford grew rapidly due to its location on the railroad line and its access to education and industry. In 1902 it amalgamated with neighboring townships to form what is now known as Terre Haute Township. In 1919, Bedford received national attention when World War I veteran Maj.-Gen Wm. Halsey Smith (1863-1937) donated land east of town for use as a military training ground for new recruits into the US Army Volunteer Reserve Corps (USARC). This event led to increased development around Smith's property including many homes being built along State Road 21 which still runs through town today. Smith also donated money towards materials needed for construction of Soldiers' Home #2 which opened in 1922 adjacent to his home on North Lincoln Street near present day North Avenue streets
Bedford was founded in 1814 as a small farming community on the east side of the Hoosier River. The first post office in Bedford was established in 1826. In 1835, Bedford became a town and was renamed after King George III of the United Kingdom. It had its own school system until 1942 when it merged with surrounding towns to form the current city of Bedford.
