Mr. Gray began selling roasted coffee from his small business on State Street in Bedford. Over time, he added a second store on Broadway Avenue in downtown Bedford. In 1927, Elisha Gray died and his son John took over the business. John sold his business in 1957 to Harry Knoppers who reopened the store under the name The Roastery with roastings by himself and other friends and family members until it was bought by Starbucks in 1992. Today, The Gristmill Coffee Shop continues to serve up some of the best-quality roasted coffee around – both espresso and filter-based drinks are available for purchase as well as pastries such as croissants or donuts).
