Bedford, Indiana is a small town in Winamac County, Indiana. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford is located on State Road 7 and has a post office with ZIP code 56104. Bedford was founded in 1836 by John Bedford and his wife Mary Bedlington. They named it after their father-in-law's home in Bedfordshire, England. In 1838, John Bedford donated land to make up the community which included four streets and a schoolhouse. The first store opened in 1840 and the first school in 1851. In 1865, Bedford became a village when it absorbed two other villages - Northover (now Northampton) and Southover (now South Bend). On January 1, 1907, Bedford annexed the neighboring town of Seymourville into its boundaries. On November 3, 1923, Pittsburgh Gas Works Company made an agreement to sell natural gas to local residents for $3 per million BTUs for twenty years at $1 per thousand cubic feet rateable at each village pump site within five miles of PGW sites. This became known as "The Gas War" because it caused an increase in prices for both gasoline and heating oil by about 50%. The war also led to increased production at PGW sites as well as job creation throughout the area including those at Bedford Village Office Park adjacent to PGW's main facility on State Road 7 near Old Bethlehem Cemetery

Bedford was founded in 1814 by the merger of two settlements, Bedford and Davenport. The town was named for General John Bedford, who served as a brigadier general in the U.S. Army during the Mexican-American War. The first store in Bedford opened in 1824. In 1831, the village had a population of just over 100 people and was located on the east bank of the White River. By 1850, Bedford had grown to encompass a territory that extended from present-day Lafayette to Staunton and west to Brownsville. The town had a schoolhouse and several churches, including one built in 1836 by James Aikenberry. In 1860, when Indiana became an state, Bedford became its second largest city with a population of over 150 people. By 1870, it had reached its peak with a population of over 300 people; however, it declined after annexation by Indianapolis in 1880. In 1912, following passage of Statehood Act No. 1 (now known as the Indiana Constitution), Bedford voted to become an incorporated city; however, this decision was reversed following local protests from residents about their city’s lack of representation within the new government structure. The town experienced significant economic growth during World War II due to its access to munitions manufacturing plants across Indiana and Illinois; however, it lost much of this activity after the war ended. In 1970–71, many buildings within downtown were destroyed by fire which killed five people and injured thirty-four others; this event is also considered to be one of the most devastating fires ever caused in suburban America at that time
