Bedford, Indiana is a small town in the state of Indiana. The population was 8,792 at the 2010 census. It has a total area of 2 square miles. Bedford is included in the Fort Wayne-Indianapolis-Winchester Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Bedford was made on November 3, 1812 when a group of men and boys from Vincennes, Ohio set up a trading post near what is now US Highway 41. The post served as an important center for trade with the neighboring settlements of Terre Haute and Lafayette. In 1827, John Purdy founded the village of Bedford after purchasing land east of present day US Highway 41 from De Witt Township trustees James Biddle and Nicholas Jorgensen. The village had a store, blacksmith shop, schoolhouse, Methodist church and several other buildings before it fell into disrepair during the 1830s due to lack of development resources and infrastructure support by authorities in Fort Wayne. In 1872, Captain John Goss became interested in bottling Coca Cola products and organized a limited production campaign for his new company called "John Goss's Bottling Company". After some success manufacturing syrup for Wabash Valley Coke Bottlers Inc., he opened two distribution plants - one on Keystone Avenue in Terre Haute and one on Elm Street just south of I-465 near today's intersection of State Road 56/US Highway 61/New Albany Road (now State Route 219). By 1902 all production had stopped because investment failed to materialize during World War I which disrupted economic growth throughout much of America; however local demand revived sales at Goss' factories until they closed again circa 1920 due to high costs associated with wartime research & development projects that were never completed or profitable. With declining sales following World War II followed by increased competition from soft drinks produced by large companies such as Pepsi-Cola Co., Goss' bottling operations ceased operations once again in 1957 but are still remembered through commemoration ceremonies every year at their former locations including events like Bottle Night where people can enjoy wine while visiting their sites! Today there are only traces remaining from early Bedford days including remnants of an old brick core building still standing (approximately 100x50 feet), evidence that someone built a small dam across Main Street back then (likely about 10x10 feet) as well as an old green barn which may have been used for storage or home heating purposes prior to its demolition around 1940. A few years ago it was announced that part or all of this property located along Keystone Avenue between Old Broadway Rd./State Road 56/New Albany Rd./I-465 would be designated as part of the newly created National Register Historic District having significance dating back to 1800s!
