When the Bedford Police Department was formed in 1879, it was one of the first law enforcement agencies in Indiana. Gorman and Sons which were donated in honor of Bedford's new mayor, John Purdy. After World War II, the department underwent several changes which included introducing body scanners and adopting modern technology such as computerized crime prevention systems (CPPS). Bedford is a town in Tipton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. Bedford is part of the Terre Haute-Lafayette Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bedford was founded by English settlers in 1812 as a small log cabin community on the west bank of the Ohio River. It grew rapidly due to its location on a trade route and its proximity to other settlements along the river. The first school in Bedford was opened in 1814. In 1830, Bedford became an autonomous Village and School District from Tipton County. In 1872, Bedford became one of nine townships within Tipton County when it was created from parts of Lafayette Township and Westville Township. In 1923, most of what is now eastern Bedford were removed to form new townships (Algonquin Heights, Arlington Heights, Bloomington North, Bloomington South), while western Bedford remained an unincorporated community until it became a town in 1960
