Beech Grove is a small town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute metropolitan area. Beech Grove was founded in 1824 by George Beech and his wife Jane. George Beech built a log cabin on a mill pond upstream from where the town now stands. In 1829, John Beech, who married Jane's sister Sarah, bought land east of the mill and established a home called Beaver Grove which still stands today. In 1835, three brothers - Ebenezer, Peleg and Jeremiah - bought land southeast of Beaver Grove and laid out a Village called “Beach Grove” which they named for their new community site. They also erected a gristmill on their property which still stands today. In 1839-1840, three more brothers - Daniel, Jonathan and Micah – purchased additional land within sight of Beach Grove from Ebenezer, Peleg and Jeremiah to create what is now known as the Township of Beechgrove . By 1840, there were 10 households in BeachGrove with an average size of 3 adults and 2 children per household. In 1861-1862 two sisters – Anna Purdy (born about 1830) and Martha Maynard (born about 1834)— moved to BeachGrove from Allamakee County in Iowa to become residents of what would eventually be known as Terre Haute (then called Middletown). Anna Purdy helped found both Terre Haute High School (now IUPUI) in 1916 and served as its first female president until her retirement in 1984; Martha Maynard served as its first female vice president until her retirement in 1986. When World War II began on September 1st 1941the local military had assembled at various sites throughout northeastern Indiana including several hundred citizens from around the township to fight under generals Eisenhower & Marshall against Nazi Germany; however most people returned home before hostilities ended On October 8th 1945 all German Americans living within TerreHaute were ordered by order of General Dwight D Eisenhower to leave or face deportation; over 7500 residents chose not to leave but did so voluntarily under threat of fine or imprisonment With repeal of Prohibition laws later that year many businesses closed down during this time including one Mr. Kapp's grocery store located on Main Street that continued operating until it was forced out by city ordinances prohibitory against liquor sales ; however other businesses such as Joplin's Hardware reopened following prohibition repeal The post-war years saw growth for Beechgrove with development taking place primarily along Third Street between US 60 & State Road 421 leading into downtown . Many homes were constructed during this time such as Goudreau's restaurant/bar overlooking Third Street near Center Field which continues to serve food services Today One notable change accompanying growth occurred when school District No.#5 merged with District No.#6 forming TerreHaute Community Schools District #1 effective July 1st 1978 resulting in increased enrollment along Third Street making it difficult for storefronts located adjacent to ThirdStreet business districts like Goudreau's popular among customers who could no longer operate without fear for closure thereby violating city ordinance forbidding storefronts within 500 feet Of School buildings Several businesses located on ThirdStreet between State Road 421 & I-465 shuttered during this period due largely to competition from larger stores opening up adjacent to them; these include: Haggerty’s Department Store operated by Frank Haggerty since 1951; Patsy’s Pizza opened up just south side 3rdSt @ SR 421 after being vacated by Haggerty’s shortly before fusion took place; King Tut’s Cafe acrossState Rd #421 closed after ten years serving breakfast Sodas accrossfrom Patsey’sPizza] The final nail in the coffin for many businesses situated along ThirdStreet came when City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting retail alcohol sales at any intersection within 500 feet Of A Municipal Services Facility Consequently most inhabitants ceased patronizing these establishments once prohibition repeal became effective on January 1st 1933
Beech Grove was platted in 1825 and is named for beech trees that were growing near the town. The first post office was founded in 1827. In 1840, Beech Grove became a township. The population of Beech Grove increased from 100 in 1850 to 4,000 by 1860. In 1862, the Union Army moved through Beech Grove and destroyed much of the town including some of the beech trees. The town didn't rebuild until after World War II when it grew again as a suburb of Indianapolis.
