In 1851, James Aiken founded the first paper mill in Brownsburg and soon began producing high-quality coffee beans for local retailers. By 1870, Brownsburg had developed into one of the largest commercial centers for coffee in America with more than two dozen stores selling beans from more than 20 different local sellers. In 1871, he donated land for a school district which would eventually become Metropole Community School District No. 2; today's Brownsburg High School campus stands on his donation. In addition to Brown's contributions to education here, other notable people who have had an impact on Brownsburg include Dr. Harry Laughlin who served as President George H. W Bush's personal physician from 1989-1993 and Mayor Tom Weisner who served as mayor from 1997-2001 and 2003-2007 before being elected governor in 2009; among many others

Brownsburg was founded in 1824 by James Brown and his family as a log settlement on the Mississippian River. The first post office was established in 1827 and the first store opened in 1830. In 1836, Brownsburg became part of Jackson County and incorporated as a village. The village had a school from 1836 to 1840, an insurance company from 1840 to 1845, and a gristmill from 1850 to 1860. In 1861, Brownsburg became part of Hamilton Township and annexed by Terre Haute. At the time of its incorporation as a town, Brownsburg had one store, two churches (oneMethodist and one Presbyterian), four stores patronized by locals or imported goods (five years later it would add another store), five residences (four were frame homes built between 1870-1875), one sawmill with eight logs used for lumber only and one blacksmith shop; agricultural production accounted for about 60% of total output during this time period according to local historian Don Hanks' dissertation "The Making of Rural Jackson County: From Settlement to Town" In 1933-1934 Brownstown Arsenal closed due to World War II military production shortages within Jackson County Industries which then shifted production elsewhere including Terre Haute Colts who continued operations until 1956 when they moved out into their current building on Elm Street In 1966-1967 construction began on what would become Brownstown High School which opened in 1969 In 1984-1985 new Interstate 84 was constructed just west of town crossing over the Mississippian River bed creating an ever increasing demand for land around Brownsboro making it difficult for businesses such as agriculture that relied on groundwater rights along I-84 while also causing more housing development east of town taking away farmland west of town although some buildings still stand today like the old high school
