Clarksville is a small town in Pulaski County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,491 at the 2010 census. Clarksville is located on the Eastern border of Pulaski County and is east of Evansville. It is bordered to the north by Highland and to the south by Knox County. The town was founded in 1836 as a post office called "Newcastle". It changed its name to Clarksville in 1845 and became a city in 1907. The Clarksville Railroad was built through the town around 1868. In 1892, it merged with the Indianapolis & Western Railway to become the Indianapolis–Clarkesville Railroad. The locomotives used for freight service were retired in 2006 and2007, but some are still preserved at two locations: one near Nashville and one near Uniontown, Kentucky. The first known settler in Clarksville was John Cline who arrived there in 1836 from Hartfordshire, England with his family. He erected a cabin on what is now US 21st Street just east of where he lived until 1840 when he sold land to James Hance for $225 per acre (about $2 per square foot). In 1840, Hance married Sarah Morse who had also come from England that year with her family. They set up their home next door to John's cabin until they moved away about 1850 when they bought land west of present-day US 21st Street where they established a farm which remains today known as Cline Road (now part of US 224). Another early settler was Isaac Bearden who arrived there about 1840 from Pennsylvania along with his family and started trading goods with other settlers before moving on into Illinois about 1850 or so according as he described himself: “I am an American man – carrying my trade thro’ Europe hither I came; but having satisfied my curiosity about this new country I have determined upon making permanent settlement hereabouts; accordingly I have laid out four hundred acres ( eighteen hundred fifty feet) full sunshiny soil Northwest of this spot†In 1850/1851 Jasper Cramer opened a store at what is now Main Street corner First Avenue between 4th and 5th Streets which continued operation until 1951 when it closed due to changing trends within Pulaski County during that time period towards developing larger towns instead of smaller ones like Clarksville which catered more towards agriculture than industry/commerce because these days most businesses are located outside Pulaski County although many residents still commute into county for work purposes despite having access to more amenities closer inside county such as shopping malls etc..
