The Coast Guard gift history in Crawfordsville, Indiana goes back to the early 1800s. The first Coast Guard detachment was formed in Crawfordsville on December 15, 1837. At that time, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was responsible for law enforcement on the Indiana shoreline. In 1864, the Crawford County Board of Commissioners authorized a new Coast Guard detachment and house at Hartwick Cove. That year,Captain John Fenton became Commandant of the Coast Guard in Evansville and directed all activities within Crawford County. One of Captain Fenton’s initiatives was to establish a coast guard library. This library would serve as both a research center and educational tool for local residents and schoolchildren. In 1886, Captain Fenton appointed Mr. Jerald Risley as curator and director of the library after purchasing land from Mrs. Anna Stilesbaugh for its construction at Hartwick Cove. A committee composed of Captains Wm Gifford (1887-92), Augustus Hafer (1893-1900), and James Condon (1901-06) oversaw the $2,000 budget for repairs to the building which included modernizing equipment such as an electrical system and adding an addition for storage capacity. The newly renovated museum opened its doors on November 8th, 1906 with an attendance of 650 people including 100 students from nearby Notre Dame High School! Today’s Coast Guard Museum is one of America’s longest running cultural institutions with collections dating back to 1903! The museum features interactive displays about maritime history with exhibits focused on coastal defense vessels from Prehistory through Modern times; oral history tours; special exhibitions;and more!

These vessels were in service until 1951 when they were replaced by new vessels. In 1957, the United States gifted a third cutter - CGIN-3 - to Great Britain. This vessel served with the British Navy until 1966 when it was surrendered to the United States. After that, CGIN-3 continued serving in reserve with the USN until 1982 when she was transferred to NOAA as part of our Department's mermaid program.
Crawfordsville is a small town in Jennings County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,691 at the 2010 census. Crawfordsville is part of the Terre Haute–Kankakee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Crawfordsville" was given to the community by John Crawfords, a pioneer settler. In 1827, John and his family moved from Wales to Jennings County and bought land near present-day Crawfordsville. They named their new home "Crawfordstown", after John's father. The first post office in Crawfordsville was established in 1828, and its first store keeper was James Hoggarty. The community became a village in 1881 when it incorporated as a city. In 1925, Crawfordesville annexed the neighboring town of Westport and renamed it Westport City. That same year, the city limits were expanded to encompass all of Jennings County including parts of Terre Haute and Kankakee Counties south of Interstate 65 and east of I-465; these annexation efforts are still being considered today as part of local government development plans for that area The city experienced growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers and their families who built homes orchards or farms around what is now downtown Crawfordesville. Many veteran families employed local professionals to help run their businesses such as carpenters, architects, builders etc., which continues into present day with many residents working in nearby cities or townships
