The Crown Point, Indiana Air Force Base Gift History began in 1941 when the United StatesAAF opened its first station at Crown Point. The base was home to the 9th Bombardment Wing and it operated untilactivated in 1948. In 1951, the United StatesAAF activated the 12th Fighter Wing at Crown Point which became operational on 1 October 1951. The wing served as a fighter-bomber unit untilactivated in 1957. When the wing was inactive, crown point also served as an airfield for an experimental remote arming program called "Nighthawks." In 1969, after years of service and many upgrades and modifications by USAF personnel and civilians, crown point AFB became one of two United States Air Force bases with permanent Tactical Aerospace Intercept (TAC) Squadron operations under its jurisdiction; other being Whiteman AFB MO). Since then, crown point AFB has been home to various elements of USAF Special Operations Command such as Delta Gold Team/Airlift Unit 10/4 ARSOPER Drones C-130H Hercules Aircraft; UAS Experiment Support Squadron (ESU); ASW Squadron 529 Weapons Division; Missile Warning Agency detachment 3/5 interceptor aircraft; and Night Vision Technology detachment 1/1 EW squadron.
