The first coffee beans were grown in this area in 1872 by David Dyer, who developed a process for roasting coffee that left it tasting fruity and like wild berries. From there, Dyer's coffee business grew rapidly and he soon became one of the leading importers and sellers of Colombian coffee. He also developed a reputation for being an excellent roaster with his unique blends. It lies on the east bank of the White River and is bordered to the north by Evansville, to the east by Terre Haute, and to the south by Bloomington. The river forms much of its eastern border. Dyer was founded in 1827 as a stop on stagecoaches between Indianapolis and Terre Haute. The first store opened in 1829. In 1830, John Wesley Dyer donated land for a courthouse and jail; this building still stands today. Dyers post office was established in 1833. By 1840, Dyers had become an important center for trade with other settlements along the White River Valley. A brick church was built in 1851 and named after Methodist pastor James Witherspoon Hodges; it remains standing today. A mill was built on the White River in 1863 and operated until 1971; it now houses a museum devoted to local history. The economy of Dyer has been based largely on agriculture since its establishment; however, some manufacturing has also taken place over time including soap production (now done out ofstate), vehicle parts manufacturing (now done out of town), paper products (including printing presses), boots/ Shoes (made here), jeans/T-shirts (made elsewhere) and many more items that have helped make this community one of rural Indiana's most popular tourist destinations year-round!

A post office was established at Dyer in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The community took its name from James Dyer, a landowner who settled there about 1840.
