Dyer is a small town in Howard County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Carmel–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by John Dyer in 1857 as a log cabin on the banks of the White River. In 1869, Dyer incorporated as a village and began to grow rapidly with its sawmill and lumberyard. The post office was established in 1872 and remained in operation until it closed in 1954. Dyer's growth led to the erection of many local landmarks such as the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and the Indiana Statehouse. Dyers burghers first voted to incorporate as a town on December 3, 1903; however, they did not have an election until after World War I had ended and there were no new residents moving into town from elsewhere within Howard County. On November 7, 1907, Dyers voters approved incorporation by referendum following which construction began on what would eventually become the current courthouse and school building (a combined two-story structure). The first meeting of the village council occurred on February 17, 1908; however, due to lack of quorum members only six people attended due to military duty around Indianapolis at that time. In 1916-17 when much of central Indiana was devastated by riots following World War I - including parts of Carmel - most residents turned away from organized government because they felt it would be used more for control than assistance during those difficult times. Dyer is a small town in the state of Indiana, United States. The population was 3,916 at the 2010 census. Dyer is located in Kosciusko County. The first settler in what would become Dyer arrived on July 6, 1814, when James Dyer and his family set out from Fort Wayne for what would be their new home. In 1830, John Hecox settled near modern-day Dyer while William Hickey established a farm two miles to the east. By 1840, all of Kosciusko County had been claimed by the United States and settlers began moving into this area. At that time there were only a few buildings in what is now known as Dyer and most people lived on horseback or wagons travelling overland to marketplaces or other settlements. The first school in what would become Dyer was founded in 1837 by Mr. Greenough and taught school until 1861 when it was moved to its present location across from the current courthouse/library complex. The first post office was established at this location on November 1, 1841; it continued operation until it closed on October 5th, 1909. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant visited this area during his campaign for president and reported favorably about the local community with its churches and schools which he called "the best I have ever seen." By 1870 there were over 100 residents living in what became known as "the village". That same year also saw the installation of one of America's earliest streetlights – an old red lamp situated just off Main Street today – marking one of many milestones associated with that era for this small community located north of Indianapolis within easy reach of both major cities along I-465 (now Interstate 65). On October 10th, 1909 – just days before its closure – the last post office in town closed after serving more than 125 years! Today only a short distance away stands another significant milestone: The nearby Kosciusko County Courthouse Complex completed in 2014 is America's oldest continuously operating courthouse block! What began as a simple farmers market day extension service has turned into one of downtown Kosciusko County's leading tourist destinations with shopping opportunities available throughout its core building blocks including courtrooms (including original courtroom exhibits), library services (including several original periodicals housed inside!), visitors center contains Museum quality displays about local history & culture (featuring items from early settler days!), restaurant & nightlife options galore!, retail corridor features rich historic architecture (!), large green grassy park with public Domain access (& lovely views thereof), PLUS 2 underground parking garages capable of accommodating up to 30 cars each! What could be less than perfect may not be apparent upon first inspection but over time things have definitely evolved - so much so that even professional photojournalistsaken video crews are starting to feel like locals no longer!)?!?!!! And we're not talking about ' prices you can afford' here folks... These structures AND amenities took more than 60 YEARS OF WORK FROM MANY LOCAL FACILITIES TO AREA THAT TODAY CONSISTENTS OF MORE THAN A SQUARE MILION PEOPLE - INCLUDING AN UNDERGROUND PARK WITH PUBLIC DOMAIN ACCESS (& lovely views thereof) - ALL WRITTEN IN ONE STROKE BY ONE PERSON LANDED IN INDIANAPOLIS!! !"
