Elkhart,Indiana is a town in Elkhart County, Indiana. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elkhart County. The name of the town is derived from an 1814 treaty between the United States and Great Britain. The first permanent settler in what would become Elkhart County was James Kapp in 1786. George Smith became one of the first settlers in central Indiana when he arrived in 1792. By 1800, there were over 100 families living in ElkhARTon Township with 2,500 acres (120 square kilometers). As early as 1814, a treaty between the United States and Great Britain provided for an exchange of prisoners on both sides after the War of 1812. This Treaty also allowed British subjects to purchase land within U.S. boundaries without having to sell their property back to America or forfeit it outright. This opened up many opportunities for American citizens who had been imprisoned by the British government during that war- such as Joshua Hinton and his brother Ebenezer Hinton who founded Hintonburg near present day South Bend., In 1824, John Stephenson purchased 5 square miles (15 km²) of land east of where present day Huntington Park sits from Nicholas Davenport for $1 per acre (4 hectares). At this time there were only about 50 people living in what would become ElkhARTon Township; all farms were small and unenclosed nature reserves rich with wildlife including deer, turkeys, rabbits and hogs which could be hunted free on these properties until they reached 4 years old or when they were moved off-site to create open space for agriculture or development purposes according to law at that time. 400 acres (16 km²) lay west of Stephenson’s sale area but because it was part of a military reservation then under Indian control it remained undeveloped until white settlement began following Starke’s victory over Tecumseh's forces at Battle Of The Thames on October 25th,. 1830 A group led by Elisha Lawrence formed a township committee with instructions to plat out large lots “for erecting families upon” and soon thereafter named themselves “ElkhARTon Township” after James Kapp’s original grantees along with their initials since no one knew how else to refer to them other than that way at that point In1834 another group led by Elijah Hicks laid out lots east side creek road called Hicksville which later became part of Arlington Heights . In 1835 William Bickford laid out lots north side creek road called Bickfordtown which became part of Northfield .
