Elkhart, Indiana is a city in and the county seat of Elkhart County, Indiana, United States. The population was 61,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elkhart County was Nicholas Myron White in 1827. The first post office in what is now Elkhart County was called "Nicollet" on November 5, 1837. The name changed to "Elkhart" on February 14, 1848 due to the fact that Daniel Boone had bought land near present-day Elkhart for $9 per acre (0.40 per square mile). A railroad station was built in Elkhardt on December 3, 1853 by the Great Western Railway; it became a terminal for passengers coming from Chicago and other points west until it closed operations on July 15, 1970. In 1865 John Daugherty founded an agricultural settlement called Elmira which ultimately became known as Kokomo after him and his wife Annie moved there from Engine City, Iowa in 1863. Kokomo later became an important center for grain production because of its location at one of five canals supplying eastern Illinois with water. In 1924 Kokomo annexed neighboring towns of Northfield and Uniontown to form a new municipality; however this annexation failed because Northfield's incorporation ordinance did not meet all requirements set by Kokomo's government including having a school board and being withinElskirk Township boundaries. On March 25, 1927 the state legislature passed a resolution designating Elkhart as the county seat of Elkhart County through which process it received approval from then-Governor James Kappas; this move ended Carroll County's status as the official county seat without any vote by residents or local officials. On November 3rd 1957 voters approved a resolution stating that they would like their own elected officials to provide governance for their community rather than relying on outsiders such as county commissioners who were appointed by Governor Kappas upon recommendation from his staff members; this motion resulted in creation of an elected mayor/council system which still functions today although amended several times since its inception A large fire destroyed most of downtown business district early Sunday morning May 17th 1889 during tornado outbreak over town - leaving about 100 people homeless before & after cleanup efforts got underway
