Elkhart, Indiana is a city in Porter County, Indiana, United States. The population was 33,529 at the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Porter County and home to the Elkhart Municipal Airport. The metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people. The first Europeans to visit Elkhart were French traders in 1679 who named it "Leharre". The first permanent settler was Nicholas Putnam who arrived in 1787 and founded what would become the town of Elkhart. He named it for his friend and mentor Colonel George Rogers Clark. In 1834, John Sibley built a sawmill on the current site of downtown Elkhart which began production that year. A post office was established at this location on November 1, 1835, under the name "Elkhart". In 1836, James Wirtz moved from Iowa Territory to start an agricultural operation here. Wirtz named his farm "Wirtzville" after him. In 1840–41 ground was broken for construction of what would become the first street in town – Elm Street – located just east of present-day Elm Street and north of Washington Avenue (then called Indian Trail). This new road connected various farms and villages in rural Porter County with downtown Elkhart; today's Elm Street still trace its original course through town center as part of that infrastructure project. By 1850, all but one block of central business district had been built up around what is now downtown Elkhart when General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived with his Union army during the American Civil War to capture Mobile Bay from Confederate forces on July 9th 1861. Aftermath saw much destruction as Sherman's troops destroyed most all vestiges of Confederate infrastructure including two cotton ginners' buildings; however they did not damage or take down any churches or other important historic structures within town limits! Elkhart became an integrated community during Reconstruction following America's heyday as a slaveholding society because African Americans were free then too! Blacksmiths helped build many early civic centers such as Barnes Hall/Lawn Theatre (1897), Masonic Lodge #2 (1901), and First National Bank Building (1913). In 1870 white citizens voted 2% into incorporation which led to prohibitionist sentiment among some white residents until passage by state legislature later that year establishing liquor control laws which effectively banned alcohol sales within municipality boundaries without voter approval or compensation for businesses impacted thereby becoming open ownerially liable for any violations occurring therein - essentially turningElsahrt into 'the dry county'. By 1920 black men had started working outside their homes alongside whites day and night manufacturing radios receivers chisels Typewriters clocks bicycles door knobs etc., contributing materially towards economic stability & progress throughout largely majority Caucasian populace followed suit thereafter culminating with predominantly blackowned & operated businesses remaining afloat thru continued growth rate despite racial discrimination prevalent prior thereto even unto present day
