Fort Wayne is a city in the U.S. state of Indiana, and the county seat of Wayne County. The population was 97,644 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Fort Wayne has been called "The cultural capital of America", and its region is known for its arts, architecture, and manufacturing industries which have made it one of the most prosperous cities in America. The first European to visit what is now Fort Wayne was French explorer Jacques Marquette on May 15, 1679. He named it after Marquette's friend and fellow explorer Louis Joliet who had visited that location earlier that year. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Fort Wayne was founded by French colonists on November 3, 1795 by General George Rogers Clark as part of their march from Kentucky to northern India in search for new lands to colonize. The town site was chosen because it stood athwart a major route between those two regions and because its natural defenses were sufficient to prevent Indian attack during this time period. In 1814, when westward expansion into Indiana began under United States President James Kappenheimer, Fort Dearborn was established at the mouth of the river Maumee in order to protect trade with Upper Michigan through that territory then held by Chief Tecumseh (the largest Native American leader remaining alive after Confederation).
