Gary, Indiana is a town in Kosciusko County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,724 at the 2010 census. Gary is the county seat and largest city of Kosciusko County. It was founded in 1837 by Josiah Gregg as part of the station on the Wabash Railroad. The first settler in what is now Gary was Gideon Dibble who arrived in 1837. The first post office opened in 1840 and was renamed for fur-trader John Cranch Post. In 1845, it became known as Greggtown after George Gregg, one of its founders. In 1847, it became a town when the Wabash Railroad extended its line to this area from Vincennes Junction. In 1870, a railroad station and mill were built north of town by Jeptha Boren and his brother Amos Boren on land that had been donated by Joshua Hormsberger Sr.. In 1896, Fred Steuben arrived with his family to start a grocery store which remains open today as Steuben's Grocery & Liquor Company (now Fred Meyer). In 1907/08 David Sanger set up a small flour mill south of town near present day South Street Elementary School; he continued to operate it until 1924 when it closed due to competition from larger mills in nearby towns such as Gary and Huntington Beach. The following year saw the establishment ofGary High School which served students from grades 9-12 until 1966 when Central High School replaced it
