The history of the United States Air Force and its gift to Goshen, Indiana began in World War II. TheAAF was founded on December 17, 1941, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt as a military air force led by Boeing Aircraft Corporations. On February 15, 1942, General Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Executive Order 9066 which activated the AAF and assigned it to the Pacific Theater of Operations under General MacArthur. On July 20, 1944, during WWII Operation Crossroads in Germany, two B-29 Superfortresses from the 5th Bombardment Group (later 1st Air Division) became lost over the Netherlands while en route to bomb Japanese positions at Assen airfield. Due to bad weather conditions and their own problems with engine reliability they were forced abort their mission and return home without dropping any bombs on Japan. This event is considered one of History's great losses for both America and Germany due to strategic bombing instead of battlefield combat which would have ended the war much earlier had these planes not gone down. The crewmen were eventually found safely by Dutch Reformed missionaries who flew them back home to Goshen where they were given temporary lodging before being brought back into service with American forces when hostilities ended three years later on September 2, 1945. After World War II ended there was a need for new aircrafts so American companies such as Boeing started producing jets like the P-47 Thunderbolt which helped America win World War III against Japan in 1945–1946. With jet technology came an increased demand for pilots so Boeing created School Training Command (STC) in 1948 which trains fighter pilot cadets from across America for Officer Candidate School (OCS). As STC grew it moved into an expanding facility known as Wright-Patterson AFB near Dayton OH until 1975 when it was merged with Edwards AFB becoming USAFE/Edwards AFB within USAir Force command structure effective October 1st1975 Withdrawn from active duty status on November 5th1991 after 31 years of providing aerial refueling services throughout Europe; tanker & combat transport squadrons within USAF numbered just 54 when First Gulf War begins; all remaining RAF squadrons disbanded or transferred out except No 717 Tactical Airlift Squadron based at Hahnemünde Airport Poland; last USAF tanker squadron disbanding atwrong place & flying wrong type almost certainly because USAF could no longer provide fuel required for RAF operations – this situation rapidly changes beginning January 1991 when first AF units arrive in Germany USAF ruins tool shed at Garmisch-Partenkirchen AB - photo dated January 6th 1991 On April 12th 2007 USS George H W Bush made history as he became first US president to visit Goshen since World War II when he arrived here for a state dinner ceremony attended by UAW President Bob Casey Jr., Mayor Tom Weisner and other dignitaries During his speech Mr Bush praised Dearborn County Schools Superintendent Dr Donna Frye who has been working tirelessly with her team ever since she took office five years ago’ said Mrs Casey “I extend my congratulations today not only to Ms Frye but also her predecessor Rick Koverman who left early this year but we will continue what Rick did—to work together very closely through our education system” After his speech Pres Obama walked around town center greeting citizens
