Greencastle is a town in Butler County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Greencastle is located on the east side of the Kankakee River and north of Chicago. The first European to notice what he called "a new land" on July 4, 1784 was John Smith and his party from Pennsylvania. They landed on what is now known as Brown Street in central Greencastle and began exploring it. In early September they reported back to their captain that they had found "a very good tract of land", which included present-day Greencastle, then part of Thorne Township in Lawrence Township. On October 3, 1784, Colonel George Washington appointed James Caldwell a surveyor general for Butler County with instructions to explore all possible lands for settlement. Caldwell's party surveyed an area extending from Brown Street south to Nicholson Road (now Lebanon Pike). This original grant included present-day Greencastle as well as portions of modern Union and Decatur townships along Withrow Creek and parts of Clinton Township today. On November 14, 1784, General David Wilkinson founded Princeton University in Princeton Junction near where current-day Elmhurst Avenue crosses with Kankakee River Boulevard (now US 41). Greencastle is a city in Allen County, Indiana, United States. The population was 12,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first European tosight Greencastle were two Dutch traders on their way from Fort Wayne towing a ship called the "Snellenberg" on July 18, 1692. At that time the area was part of France and most of what is now Greencastle was swampy and uninhabitable. A post office called Greencastle was established in 1799, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1853. Greencastle became an agricultural community with early settlers coming to raise corn and other crops; green cheese production started about 1830. By 1850, there were over 150 businesses in town including six banks, three insurance companies and five newspapers. In 1853, Greencastle voters approved a new city charter which formed the nucleus of present-day Indianapolis. In 1889–90 construction began on what would eventually become known as Lucas Oil Stadium; when it opened in 1991 it became one of only two professional sports stadiums ever built in the United States (the other being Fenway Park). The stadium has been host to such events as the Colts/Patriots game (a doubleheader), Indy 500 races (including both American Leagues Championships) and many others since its opening; it also serves as home field for the Indiana Hoosiers men’s soccer team U23s and women’s soccer team Big Ten Champions Holy Cross Fighting Irish football club which played its first competitive match at Lucas Oil Stadium on November 24th 2013 against defending MLS champion Seattle Sounders FC

In 1925, Greencastle merged with neighboring townships to form what is now known as Lake Township.
