Greenfield is a town in Dearborn County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Greenfield was Levi Coffin on May 2, 1824. He and his family took up temporary residence on an island in the Pee Dee River just downstream from present-day Greenfield Village. In 1830, John Davenport established a tavern in what is now downtown Greenfield and named it "Davenport's." A post office was established at Greenfield on October 20, 1830, by Josiah Silliman with the name "Greenfield." In 1836 (or 1840), George Stephenson founded Illinois Central Railroad company to build a railroad through Dearborn County from Terre Haute to Elkhart. His green field near current day White Hall served as the locomotive depot and engine garage for IC&A's trains until it was destroyed by fire in 1903. The first school in Greenfield opened in 1839 when four teachers taught one class per week at a log cabin near what is now Main Street. A schoolhouse was built in 1840 by Reverend James Caldwell and dedicated on September 16th of that year; it burned down soon after but replaced with a new building which still stands today across fromOlde High School (now known as Purple Heart High School). One of the most important early residents of Greenfeldt Township was Revs Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail who established two churches there: First Congregational Church (later known as First Methodist) which stood south of Elmira Road between Center Street and Third Avenue east of where US-60 intersects I-465; then Second Methodist Church which stand north of Elmira Road between Center Street and Fourth Avenue east of I-465 across from present day Olde High School also now known as Purple Heart High School. From this location they preached their messages to area farmers via horseback or buggy services beginning on November 17th 1837 while wagon rides were available every other day..
