In 1925, the first Coast Guard Station was established in Greensburg. This station was a small cabin on the banks of the river that served as a stop for fishermen and other boaters. In 1957, the Coast Guard Station in Greensburg became an additional unit within the then newly created Indiana National Guardsmen Regiment. As time passed, new units were activated at this station and more members were assigned to help protect our nation’s coastline. The Unit History Museum located on Stratton Boulevard displays artifacts and memorabilia related to this important part of our community’s history! Today, there are three active Coast Guard Stations located in Greensburg: one is housed inside Naval Base Indianapolis; another is operates out of Brownsville, Texas; while still another is based at Fort Wayne (formerly Fort Wayne Naval Air Terminal). These stations provide law enforcement support to local communities along our nation’s coastlines, as well as providing essential humanitarian assistance during natural disasters such as hurricanes or earthquakes. Greensburg, Indiana is a town in La Porte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,953 at the 2010 census. Greensburg was founded in 1814 and named for Colonel George Peter Greensburg of Pennsylvania. The first post office opened in Greensburg on December 15, 1818. The town's growth was slow due to lack of transportation and other reasons until the railroad arrived in 1869 and made it easier to get goods to market. The arrival of the steel industry also helped spur development as companies such as Alcoa and DuPont moved into the area. Today, Greensburg is known for its dairy products and manufacturing industries along with its large agricultural sector.
