Greensburg is a small town in the southern Indiana County seat of Greencastle. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 1814, General David Wilkinson founded Greensburg as a log farm on the banks of the White River. He named it after his ancestor, George Wilkinson, who had settled in what is now Greencastle in 1795. Over time, other settlers arrived and Greensburg grew to become one of the most important towns in central Indiana. The first school in Greensburg was built on land donated by Amos Welch in 1837. The first teacher was Mrs. John Gentry and classes began on October 3, 1837. By 1840, there were eight schools in Greensburg serving grades one through twelve with an enrollment of 233 students. In 1847-48, new school buildings were built and enrollment climbed to 375 students; by 1850-51 there were ten schools serving grades one through twelve with an enrollment of 2,047 students! That year also saw establishment of a first private library which served both public and private Schools until 1914! In 1865-66 when central Indiana became part of the Union during the American Civil War (and later returned to Confederate hands), Greensburg's status as a thriving community rapidly declined due to its location within Confederate lines at war's end – despite valiant attempt by some residents to rebuild following hostilities ended two years earlier! However, over time local economy revived thanks to such endeavors as heavy manufacturing plants established throughout centralIndiana during this era (Wright Bomber planes being but one example). A tornado touched down near Greensburg on May 10th 1955 causing severe damage including fatalities; that event has been called "the biggest natural disaster in our town's history." A new shopping mall opened up just north of town along I-65 soon after – making greensbergtown once again one big shopping center! Greensburg, Indiana is a town in central Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Evansville Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1827, Jesse Grimes founded Greensburg with land he had purchased from the Potawatomi Indians. In 1838, James Waddell and others built a gristmill on Green Creek. The gristmill was replaced by one in 1850 but remained in use until 1975. In 1857, Alexander McDonald opened a grocery store and post office in Greensburg; it remained open until 1984. In 1865, John Aiken erected the first schoolhouse in Greensburg; it was replaced by a new building in 1929. From 1865 to 1896, Jno Brawley operated an ice cream parlor and hotel in Greensburg; it closed operation after World War I. On October 15, 1976, during the Indian Wars of Central America Crisis (the southern US-Mexican border conflict), two bombings killed three people and injured over 50 people near Greensburg Municipal Airport when an improvised bomb detonated while passengers were boarding a bus there for economic development class travel to Chihuahua City; this was also called "The Greenburgh Bombing." On November 9th 1948 local resident Vernon Ladd made history when he became the first black person to be elected as mayor of Greensburg when he defeated incumbent JF Byers 2-1%. For many years before that time only white citizens could serve on city councilmember positions which limited their impact on policymaking within the municipality - although they did have some say through referenda or other forms of communication with citizens regarding municipal issues and concerns In 1957 Manchester Manufacturing Company started production of lawn mowers using an engine driven belt drive system that would later become known as "GM" lawn mowers . This change from hand-held power tools to large machines finally ended manual labor throughout most parts of America during this time period as tractors became more prevalent .
