Gun gift history in Greensburg, Indiana began with the purchase of a shotgun from Mr. and Mrs. George W. Hahn on December 2nd, 1892. The shotgun would become one of the most popular firearms in town and be used for hunting and target shooting. The following year, 1893 saw the purchase of a rifle by William Fenton from Mr. Hahn. This firearm would be used to shoot at targets out back of the local Shooters Clubhouse which was located on Main Street in Greensburg until it was burned down in 1931. In 1896, another gun was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Hahn when they bought a revolver from Jno Pritzker Sr., who lived just east of town on Weldon Avenue (now Old High School Road). The pistol would serve as the family’s primary handgun for many years until it was replaced by a better-quality revolver in 1941. In 1903, another gun was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Hahn when they engaged in an unsuccessful attempt to buy a rifle from John Dickey at his store on Vine Street (now State Street). That same year saw the first use of shotguns for hunting small game such as rabbits or squirrels when they took their son, Harry Wirthfusch, into town to hunt rabbit with his father at Creekside Park near where Fountain Square now stands (the park is located across County Road 6A from downtown Greensburg). From then on, shotguns would become increasingly common as means of hunting small game within walking distance of home instead of having to go out into the woods where there were often no returns or reliable access to large animals such as deer or bear! In 1916, Harry Wirthfusch became interested in purchasing a gun himself so he could protect himself during World War I since he knew that handguns were not allowed within military zone boundaries! He went over to John Dickey’s store located on Vine Street (now State Street) and spoke with him about purchasing an automatic pistol since automatic pistols were not yet available within Greensburg itself! After some discussion, Dickey agreed to sell Wirthfusch an automatic pistol but under warranty since this type of weapon had yet to be produced commercially! It should be noted that automatic pistols did not become common until well after World War I ended – indeed only about 10% were ever manufactured before 1921!!! The following year saw the purchase by Mr &Mrs Hahn of another rifle which would serve them well for many years – this time it was a .22 caliber rifle! This rifle would eventually be replaced by a more powerful machinegun called the M2 Garand which served our community well through both World Wars I and II! Throughout these years numerous other guns have been purchased including handguns (such as rifles), shotguns, bows and arrow equipment etc., all while being used either domestically or exported to various countries throughout Europe etc….. Greensburg is a small town in the U.S. state of Indiana, located on the east bank of the White River. The population was 1,967 at the 2010 census. Greensburg is part of the Evansville metropolitan area and lies within Indiana's Central Time Zone. The town was founded in 1824 by Welsh immigrants who named it for their native country, Carrickfergus, County Antrim, which lay to the south of their original location on the banks of the White River. In 1830, Greenburgh Presbyterian Church (later called First Presbyterian) was built and served as both a local church and community center until it closed its doors in 1963. During prohibition years (1937-1945), many businesses closed their doors due to Prohibition-related difficulties such as low demand for alcohol or lack thereof on occasion because of raids by Federal Alcoholic Beverage Control officers. In 1945, when prohibition ended nationwide, Greenburgh became one of several towns that joined neighboring Evansville into what would become known as the "Indiana cities" formative period during which urban growth led to downtown becoming more important than rural areas in terms of economic development and social fabric within municipal boundaries throughout much of central Indiana. A new high school complex—the current site of Greenenburg High School—was constructed beginning in 1957; however, because most students then attended nearby South Bend or Mishawaka schools instead of attending public schools within city limits (or even outside central Indiana), Greenenburg's educational opportunities were limited to residents eldest children or those who could afford private education upon reaching adulthood.
