The first coffee shop in Hammond, Indiana opened in the late 1800s. The shop was called The Coffee House and it served coffee from a pot on the premises. In 1907, the business changed its name to The Roastery and Shop. In 1912, the Roastery moved to what is now known as 5000 N Michigan Avenue. It became a grocery store before changing its name again in 1951 to The Coffee Shop & Bakery. In 1986, the Coffee Shop & Bakery closed its doors and reopened as an artisan coffee house under the name of Hammond's Best Coffee. It remains an independently operated business today.
Hammond is an incorporated city in and the county seat of Dunkirk Township, Indiana. The population was 9,811 at the 2010 census. Hammond is a small town with a typical Midwestern lifestyle. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Indianapolis and 40 miles (64 km) south of Fort Wayne. Hammond has a long history dating back to 1824 when it was founded as a settlement by the Ohio River settlers John Hammond and his family. By 1870, Hammond had developed into an agricultural community with a wide variety of crops including corn, beans, rice, etc., which were shipped down the river to Chicago for market. The city was named after General George Washington's brother-in-law Samuel French Hammond who served as commander of American forces in Europe during the Revolutionary War. General George Washington made him an honorary member of his regiment and later presented him with land in what is now Dunkirk Township. In 1824 Hammond became one of many settlements on the western side of the Indiana state line following the opening of what are now known as Big Four rivers: Whitewater River on the north side; Crawfordsville River on the east side; Tellico Creek on the south side; and White Earth Creek on top of rolling hills running along either bank for about 12 miles (19 km). These new towns were supposed to provide trade goods between these forks and merchants from eastern Indiana who operated stores near present day Howard County on White Earth Creek. In 1830 nearly all male residents over age 15 living within 10 miles (16 km) west or 8½ miles (12 km) south served in local militias against Native Americans led by chief Tecumseh Sherman who lived 1 mile (1¼ km) northeast across WHITE EARTH CREEK from where citizens could fire warning shots if they sighted Indians coming ashore or raiding their homes In 1834 John Marshall installed public lighting in downtown Hammond which helped make it more commercialized while also attracting attention from Major James Kappesberger who built a lumber mill there in 1840 During this time period white farmers began moving into surrounding rural areas creating racial tensions that continue through today Hammond experienced its first real growth during Antique Road Show season starting in 1875 when businesses along Antique Road started advertising special rates for admission to events occurring every evening throughout July & August

In the early 1800s, Dutch immigrants brought their own methods of roasting and brewing which gave rise to Dutch-style coffees. In 1876, French sailors landed on Java Island and encountered a drink they called "Java Coffee." This unique brew was thought to be made from beans roasted on Java Island and imported back to France. The French name for this type of coffee is café au lait (coffee with milk). The Italians introduced java (Javanese: guarana) beans into their homeland in the 1700s. Java Coffee spread throughout Italy before becoming popular among Italian caffeine addicts during the 1800s. In 1838, Swiss chocolate maker Johann Friedrich Bode started producing cocoa powder that would change how people viewed chocolate forever; his cocoa powder was mixed with ground roasted Javaneese coffee beans for an extra bitter taste that he named "Bode's Specialty Coffee". Bode's Specialty Coffee gradually replaced all other types of coffeepot when it came out in 1857 as Switzerland's national beverage!

John C.'s son, Roy D., continued his father's political career after World War II and served as mayor twice (1964-1966 and 1970-1974).
