Huntington is a city in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. Huntington is the sixth largest city in Hancock County and the county seat. It lies on the right bank of the river known as White River and has been since 1785 its main town. The first full-time white settler in what is now Huntington was John Nicholson who arrived in 1785 from England with his family. Nicholson built a cabin on what is now Water Street. He named it "Newburgh" after his home country of Newburghshire, Scotland. In 1812, Nicholas's grandson John Nicholson II donated land to make up for part of what would become Huntington Township which he had bought from Nicholas'. TheNicholson donation became one of the largest frontier grants ever given out in America. From this grant came many families that have lived in or are still living in Huntington today including: Hargrave, Astor, Bretton Woods, Dayhoffer and others. In 1814, James Ketchum purchased 2 acres (0 hectares) of land east of present day Holmes Road for $100 dollars cash and moved into what is now known as "Ketchum's Corner". His purchase marked the beginning of what would be called "the Ketchum period" because it was during this time that most industrial growth took place within walking distance of downtown Huntsville." In 1824–25 James Ketchum surveyed lots around present day Ketchum Boulevard and Greenville Avenue where he started to build a brick factory which he named "The Indianapolis Brick Factory Company", later renamed as The Indiana Brick Company Incorporated (IBC). This company manufactured bricks until 1907 when it merged with another Indianapolis based company to form Bricksource Incorporated (Bricksource). In 1829 David Wittenour founded an agricultural store at 301 S Main Streetknown then as the First Farmers' Store & Market". That building still stands across from IBC headquarters at 5th and State Streets today serving as a restaurant/bar/venue called David Wittenour's Place . After years of success with his store Wittenour decided to move his business operations to Pottersville where he founded precipitation control products firm Paintscape Industries Incorporated (PCI) also located on 5th & State Streets today serving as an industrial park hosting companies such as Monsanto Co., Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co., ITT Corporation among others

Huntington is a city in and the county seat of Miami County, Indiana, United States. The population was 30,824 at the 2010 census. It was one of the fastest-growing cities in Indiana from 2000 to 2010. In 2006, Forbes listed Huntington as one of "The 10 Best Cities for Work/Life Balance." Huntington's roots can be traced back to 1805 when a group of farmers founded a town called Cedar Rapids on the banks of the Wabash River near present-day Fort Wayne. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 had become an important trading center on the Ohio River. When American Revolutionary War forces invaded Canada in 1775, General George Washington ordered his army to cross the river and march into Quebec City, where they destroyed most of what remained of that city's infrastructure. Canadian troops burned down Cedar Rapids while plundering its residents; this event is known as "the burning of Cedar Rapids". In 1837, Hancock County was created from parts of Union and Knox Counties and its first elected official was John Buell. By 1840, all but two blocks in downtown were built up with homes for white men only - an event which has been incorrectly cited as starting the end of downtown growth in Huntington. With Indianapolis becoming increasingly populous during this time frame and many new businesses opening up throughout central Indiana (e.g., law firms), downtown quickly lost much if not all its vitality or commercial interest because much progress had already been made eastward towards both Indianapolis’s business district (Northeast) and westward towards Evansville’s hospital district (Southwest). Driven out of their homes by land values rising faster than wages—a phenomenon now typically associated with suburban areas outside major metropolitan areas—most white men head southward into undeveloped rural areas adjacent to those within Indianapolis limits until such time as they may reestablish themselves therein once again through incorporations or purchase thereof; so it occurred that rapidly developing eastern neighborhoods became more important than previously while slowly developing western ones sank below par because they could not keep up withvalue changes affecting only easterners living within their boundaries... This pattern continued until after World War II when redevelopment momentum accelerated due largely to new Interstate 85 freeway construction linking central Indiana with Illinois populating newly developed northwest suburbs such as Speedway, North Tiffin Township ( predecessor to Arlington Heights), Willowbrook Village ( north side suburb today known as Elkhart Lake), Carmel Valley Rural Municipality (southwest corner7th Ward) [now Elkhart Township], etc., thus reversing course begun prior to interstate migration creating density corridors pushing away older designated streetcar communities along Ravenswood Avenue between Greenwood Hills Cemetery & I-465 for example producing “Downtown Dudley” today located east northeast across I-465 from Elkhart Township boundary near about walnut Streetlight [now Eighty Ninth Street] just south west off I-465 next door on Northwest Side opposite Hendricks Road map location showing original plat above post office opened Elmhurst Place now known as Delaware Park second largest shopping center eastnorthwestofI 465Elkhart Township boundaries
