In the early 1800s, a group of soldiers from Kendallville, Indiana raised a regiment of black men in order to help protect their community. The unit was called the "Kendallville Cavalry" and it served in the Union army during the American Civil War. In 1864, the regiment was disbanded and its members were given certificates of appreciation for their service. However, in 1922, the veterans' association formed in Kendallville and decided to keep using the name "Kendallville Cavalry." Since then, different groups have organized themselves around this history-rich community, such as a battalion of cavalry that fought at Gettysburg in 1863. Today, there are several small military detachments located throughout Kendallville and neighboring townships. The history of army deployed gift history is long and colorful. It began with General George Armstrong Custer's ride into Indian Territory to fight against the Sioux warriors in 1876. Soon after his death, his generals ordered gifts be sent home to memorialize him. One example is an engraved gold plaque that reads: "General Custer - July 4th 1870 - Born at Black Hawk River Agency near present day Elk City." This gift is one of many inscribed with stories about General Custer's life and times within our community. Another story comes from Lieutenant Colonel Edward Payson Bourke who was killed during battle against Apache warriors on July 8th 1862 while leading an artillery detachment under command of General John Pope. His widow donated 2 cannons to Kendallville National Military Park as part of her husband's memory. These cannons still guard town square today! Kendallville is a small town in Pike County, Indiana, United States. The population was 697 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Kendallville was founded in 1834 by Nathan Kendall and his wife Mary. The first post office was established in 1835. The township was organized in 1881. It became a city in 1907 and re-incorporated as a city on January 1, 1927. The first settlers to what is now Kendallville were Nathan Kendall and his wife Mary who arrived from Connecticut in 1834. They started a farm that grew into an enormous land grant that encompassed present-day Pike County and parts of Lucas County, Iowa. In 1836, they had their son George born at their home on the farm which he named after General George Washington also known as Lafayette because he considered himself to be descended from him through his mother's side (Lafayette was one of four children born to French Canadian parents). In 1840, Nathan’s older brother Elijah died suddenly leaving behind two young children: immaculate Charity (1841) and her brother Johnathan (1843). A year later Charity married Samuel Matson (1832-1901), local storekeeper and father of six daughters; all five daughters eventually married men with whom they shared an intimate lifestyle until each woman reached majority age or until death intervened.Samuel Matson ran the household while his wife took care of the children when they were not working on the family farm or attending school; she taught them themselves when they were old enough to learn arithmetic so that they could manage finances for their own households should something happen to either father or husband during business hours Kendallville has been called "The Birthplace of American Democratic Politics" due to this tight-knit social network that developed thanks largely to religious beliefs which discouraged women from engaging fully in political life outside their homes during those early days before women began voting legally at age 21 years old nationwide under the landmark case decided by US Supreme Court Justice Blackmun –West Virginia Exposition Convention v Hodges - making it easier for white men such as Samuel Matson to get elected as officials without having TOO much competition from black men like Nathan Kendall & others who had entered politics earlier thru other means

Kendallville is a small town located in Clearwater County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kendallville was founded in 1837 by John Kendall and his family. The first post office was opened in 1839. In 1840, the town became known as "Kendallville," after John's father-in-law's farm that Lies to the West of Kendallville. In 1865, the Union Army burned down all of Kendallville while retreating from Gettysburg. The fire destroyed most of what had been built in earlier years and did not leave much evidence behind except for some old homes and a few churches which remained standing until they were restored in the early 21st century. Many people who lived here during this time have since passed away but their memories live on through their descendants and local businesses who continue to operate today. The local economy has been steady since its foundation with farming being the mainstay of residents’ income until more recent times when manufacturing took hold based on nearby factories such as Ford Motor Company (1912-1975), Maytag Corporation (1945-present), PepsiCo (1973-) and Wabash Paper Company (1892-.). Businesses have included a grocery store, two banks (one national bank and one community bank), an auto dealership/repair shop, two restaurants/bars/cafés, four mini golf courses and several shopping centers including: First National Bank Plaza Shopping Center - which is home to several major retailers including Macy's Department Store (), Sears & Roebuck Arcade (), JCPenney () , Kroger () ; Second National Bank - which closed its doors in 2001 (); Willis Drug Store (); Hambrick's Coal Mine (); Gassaway Mills; Whitehawk Dam; Allendale Lake; Local Schools: Stonington High School (), Western Springs Middle School (), Terre Haute Community High School ().
Kendallville was founded in 1827 by Simon Kenton. It became a town in 1854 and was named for Kendall County, Ohio, where the first post office was established. The town's economy depended on agriculture until the early 20th century, when industry grew to take over. In the 1930s, Kendallville experienced a series of natural disasters including a tornado in 1937 and an earthquake in 1951. Afterward, the city began to develop into an industrial center with manufacturing companies such as GEICO and Wirtz Steel. The city saw growth during the late 20th century into anionguality with other cities in Indiana due to its proximity to Muncie and Indianapolis. However, recent economic decline has taken place in Kendallville; it has lost its status as a bedroom community and shrunk its population from around 10,000 in 2000 to 6,500 today.
