The city was founded on the banks of the White River and became an important center for coffee production after a grant from James K. Polk was issued in 1828. The grant allowed two private citizens to purchase 10 acre lots and begin growing coffee trees. In 1852, Kendallville became a town and began developing its own infrastructure including a school, Presbyterian church, courthouse and jail. By 1880, Kendallville had become one of the largest cities in Indiana with over 200 residents. The city experienced economic growth during the 1800s due to its location at the junction of several wagon routes that transported goods throughout eastern Illinois and westernIndiana. However, by 1900 Kendallville had lost its status as an important commercial centerdue to competition from larger cities such as Indianapolis and Chicago. Kendallville was founded by Daniel Kendall in 1828. He named it after his father and namesake, Kendall (1763-1827), an early settler in this area. The original post office was established in 1829 and remained open until it was discontinued in 1903. In 1868, the land that now makes up Kendallville was donated to the town by John Denton for its schools and churches. The first school building was erected on what is now Main Street in 1870. The present high school building opened in 1951 and replaced the previous one which had been built about 1840. According to the 2010 census, there are 706 people of Polish descent living in Kendallville; 5% of all residents. There also are a few hundred African Americans who live here as well as other minority groups like Hispanics and Asians. Kendallville is a small community located in Hendricks County,Indiana. The town was founded in 1847 and originally named INDIANAPOLIS. It was renamed Kendallville after General James Fenton Kendall, the first United States military commander to be killed in action during the Mexican-American War. In 1901, Kendallville had a population of just over 100 people and it was incorporated as a city on October 15, 1902. The post office moved from Indianapolis to Kendallville in 1907. At one time, Kendallville boasted some of the best farmland in Indiana. Today much of that land is dedicated to industrial uses such as corn and soybean production, manufacturing and warehousing operations. The town has also experienced growth in retail activity with new developments such as an Amazon online store opened in 2016 and a Walmart warehouse opened in 2018. Kendallville’s history can be traced back to 1847 when General James Fenton Kendall arrived at the port of New Orleans looking for passage on his way home from fighting Mexico. He found that there were no available seats on the steamboats so he journeyed inland and began survey work for what would become Hendricks County.
