La Porte is a small town in LaPorte County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Terre Haute Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1836 and named for Captain James H. Portage. The first settler in LaPorte was Captain James H. Portage who arrived in 1836 from Ohio. He founded a log cabin on the current site of the Town Hall and built a store and other buildings to support his trade as a country doctor and land speculator. In 1840, he married Esther Morse and they moved to what is now the northeast corner of town where they built another log cabin which still stands today as the Old Post Office Building. They also raised two children: John Witherspoon (1841-1907) who became US Senator from Indiana from 1907-1913, and Emma Ladd (1843-1920). Captain James H.Portage's descendants continue to live in LaPorte with their headquarters located downtown since 1951 at 219 S 4th Street NW Suite 7007
