Lafayette is a small town in central Indiana, United States. It is the seat of Lafayette Township and the population was 5,489 at the 2010 census. The name "Lafayette" comes from Lafayette Hill, in what is now eastern Ottawa County. The first settler in what would become Lafayette was Nicholas Nicholson who arrived in 1795. He built a log cabin on the east side of the town. The first store opened in 1802 and by 1815 there were ten stores and two hotels in operation. In 1919-1920, Lafayette also saw significant community activity during Prohibition which led to its nickname "the last great drinking town". In 1957-1958, due to advances in technology including television remote control cars and home automation systems, Purdue University's School of Medicine moved from West Terre Haute to downtown Indianapolis making it one of the most rapidly growing metropolitan areas in America at that time.

During his time here he developed close relationships with many key leaders in both politics and culture including James Kieft, George Washington Carver, Thomas Jefferson Davis, Franklin D Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson and John F Kennedy
In 1802, the United States of America was founded. The area now known as Lafayette, Indiana was part of the original thirteen American colonies. The first European to come to what is now Lafayette was Pierre-André Sieur de La Salle, who built the French Fort Joliet in 1785. By 1800, Lafayette had a population of about 350 people and was a small village located on the banks of the elder river. In 1802, when Jefferson became President of the United States, he moved his government from Virginia to Washington D.C., which made Lafayette an official U.S. town. With its status as a town came responsibility for providing services such as roads and schools to its residents. In 1860, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States and took office, he ordered all U.S. towns with a population over 10,000 to become cities proper under Section 5 of the 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution (which granted citizens "the right without discrimination any person … born or naturalized in any State" to vote). To commemorate this event, Lafayette City Council voted in 1961 to change its name from "Lafayette" to "Dodge City".
