A severe fire destroyed most of downtown in 1857; but construction began on a new courthouse and other buildings which were completed in 1861 and remain standing today. The community grew rapidly during the late 19th century with industrial development including production of oil lamps for streetlights, shoeshine parlors and printing presses from local mills until World War II when the automotive industry took over much of those operations. On July 14, 1907, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated battery No. 5 (now Battery Park Place) at Lafayette's expense as a memorial to American McGee Company employees killed in World War I who had worked for Chicago Electric Railway Company (later Chicago Fire Department).
