The railroad arrived in 1865 which created new opportunities for business as farmers could now sell their products directly to passengers rather than having to go through local merchants. This also led to increased construction activity as many people wanted to create new homes near the railroad tracks because they were guaranteed easy access to goods and services that would improve their quality of life. The arrival of automobiles also gave people new opportunities for commuting and creating wealth within minutes or hours insteadof days or weeks like it had been before. Lawrence experienced some growth during World War II as many residents enlisted in military service either through enlistment bonuses or by simply buying munitions (which was then sold back home).
