The Lawrence National Guard was organized on July 20, 1861. The Lawrence National Guard was the first national guard in Indiana. It also served as the first unit of the United States military to be stationed in Indiana. The unit was created from a group of local militia companies that had been authorized by Congress to act as a protectorate against Federal aggression in the state of Indiana. The Lawrence National Guard initially consisted of 8 officers and 100 enlisted men. The unit operated out of barracks located at State School and later at Masonic Temple on Market Street. In 1869, President Andrew Johnson issued an executive order designating the Lawrence National Guard as a reserve force for use in case of war with Mexico. This order provided for theNational Guard to be mobilized for service during both the American Civil War (1861-1865) and World War II (1939-1945). At its peak, the Lawrence National Guard numbered over 5,000 soldiers and women volunteers. The Lawrence NationalGuard participated in every major conflict fought by America during its history; including wars with Mexico (1869-1871), Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1975-1977), Afghanistan (2001-2002), Iraq (2003-2009), and Libya (2011). In total, over 1,500 members of the Lawrence NationalGuard have died in action since 1861. Today, there are more than 9,000 member organizations across Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand serving together as part of NATO’s Allied Command Europe Area command which includes responsibility for policing operations within alliance member nations' borders As part of this multinational effort security forces from these nations work jointly under one roof to provide critical support to our sister nation's defence

The Lawrence, Indiana National Guard was organized on December 12, 1907. The unit was the first in the state and it served until 1935. In 1917, the Lawrence National Guard became part of the American Expeditionary Forces and World War I ended with the armistice. The Lawrence National Guard returned to civilian control in 1919 and did not serve in World War II.
Lawrence is a city in Muncie, Indiana, United States. It was founded on the Potomac River by religious refugees who left the American Revolution. The city has grown rapidly since it was made a part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area in 1972. The population of Lawrence was 78,912 as of 2010 and is expected to grow to 97,821 by 2020. The city's economy is based on services such as health care and education, but its largest employer is MCA Victor Music Inc., which operates a major rock music festival each year in September. The city also contains several smaller businesses and organizations including the non-profit Western Illinois University–Purdue University Indianapolis. Lawrence began as a small agricultural community on the banks of the Potomac River near modern day downtown Muncie. Presbyterian missionaries from Scotland arrived in 1786 and began baptizing settlers into Christianity. These pioneers were followed by others over time until there were more than 100 people living in what became known as "Lawrence". In 1813, when General Winfield Scott took command of an army invading India, he ordered his troops to stop at Lawrence for lunch before continuing their advance - this gave rise to the name Scott's Army Restation (now Scottrade Center). In 1815, after Indian resistance ended with tragic results at Vicksburg, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered his troops to move on downriver towards Fort Dearborn across the river - this halted at Lawrence where they stopped for dinner according to local legend (this event is often incorrectly attributed to Union general Ewing Burnside). After spending one night at Lawrence, Grant's force continued its march upstream towards Fort Dearborn; when they reached that location late that night they burned all bridges over the river in order not to lose any time getting reinforcements upriver should another battle start upriver soon afterwards. 2 years later (1817), during Andrew Jackson's presidency following Tennessee's secession from America), President Jackson ordered General Winfield Scott again northward along river bank for lunch; upon arrival at Lawrence he found that many homes had been looted during previous nights' raids by Native Americans! This led to Jackson ordering General Myron Ewing--the head of military operations for Jackson--to take control of affairs back home while he toured western Kentucky overseeing operations there; within days Kennedy had word back home that no supplies or men could be brought upriver so new orders were given direct from Washington forbidding any further advances until supplies could be landed closer downstream (this event is commonly inaccurately credited with Gen Franklin D Roosevelt). The National Guard has a rich history that goes back to the Revolutionary War. When the Continental Congress formed the First Regiment of Artillery in 1775, it was made up of men from different states who volunteered their services. The regiment served solely against British forces and did not fight in the American Revolution. In 1861, President Abraham Lincoln called for an all-volunteer army to help protect America during the Civil War. As enlistments for the National Guard began to grow, so too did its budget. By 1865, there were over 1 million soldiers draftees in uniform nation wide. During World War II, the National Guard played a critical role in providing manpower for both military and civilian initiatives. In 1945, Congress passed act which authorized one hundred thousand enlisted men and women to serve as volunteers with six months notice of discharge or release from service. This was known as “the voluntarism law†because many people felt that they should be able to express themselves through their own participation in society by choosing to serve their country without interference from government officials. Today, the National Guard continues its important role in our society by providing training and readiness for future emergencies such as natural disasters or terrorist attacks. Additionally, it provides support to local police departments when needed and helps keep our communities safe by deploying reservists during times of peace when necessary

Lawrence was a small town in central Indiana from 1824 to 1868. It was named for General George Lawrence, the hero of the Battle of Monmouth and who had been killed in action before it. The first settler in Lawrence was James Bledsoe, who arrived in 1827. The town grew rapidly due to farming and cattle ranching, with a population of about 100 in 1830. Population growth slowed during the 1830s as new immigrants began arriving from eastern Europe. After the Indian Wars ended, Lawrence experienced an economic boom as veterans returned home and businesses opened up. In 1848, the state legislature passed a bill providing for township organization; Lawrence became one of sixteen townships in central Indiana. Growth continued through the 1850s as farmers added more acreage to their farms and businesses flourished until the Civil War brought significant challenges to both local economies and social stability. The war caused widespread destruction and Losses including more than $2 million dollars worth of property damage alone; many residents fled into neighboring communities or left completely behind. The war also led to increased demand for government services such as education, health care, military duty, food assistance and transportation. Afterward, Lawrence experienced profound transformation; its economy bounced back quickly while its social fabric stabilized overall despite some key concerns that were still present after slavery had been abolished: race relations persisted unchanged among whites (although there were some efforts at integration), land values remained high but notranically inflated (a result of exaggerated animal husbandry practices) while poverty rates were relatively low given already high levels of material abundanc
Lawrence was founded in 1814 by James Lawrence, a Quaker who served as the first justice of the peace. The town changed its name to Lawrenceburg in 1868 after it became an incorporated city. In 1907, Lawrence was named the capital of Indiana after Indianapolis.
