Martinsville is a city in Johnson County, Indiana, United States. The population was 13,837 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Decatur, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settlers in what is now Martinsville were Anthony and Nicholas Martyn who arrived in 1785. The town was named for General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolutionary War. The Martyns donated land to the town and construction began on a courthouse and schoolhouse in 1810. In 1827, the railroad was built through Martinsville by George Stephenson and it quickly became a center of trade and industry. By 1830, there were over fifty businesses operating in downtown Martinsville with twenty-one employees. In 1836, John Beardsley purchased land east of town from theMartyn family which he used as his agricultural holdings until his death in 1865. At Beardsley's death two years later, most of what is now eastern Johnson County was acquired by Andrew Mellon from Andrew Carnegie for $1 million dollars which made him one of America's wealthiest men at that time. Mellon moved his residence toMartinsville after purchasing land there from Andrew Carnegie in 1901 because he felt that living close to McCormick & Company would give him more control over their products than if he lived some distance away. He also wanted to be closer to relatives who resided in Chicago or Pittsburgh. From 1901 until his death in 1924, Mellon spent many days visiting various businesses and industries located around Martinsville before departing for work each morning at 5:00 A.M.. His widow continued this tradition until her death nine years later due to ovarian cancer). As one of America's richest men at that time (in 1913), Mellon left behind an extensive fortune which has been invested into various businesses throughout central Indiana including A&P Grocery Stores Inc., Pepsi-Cola Co., Great Western Paper Co., US Steel Corporation (now ArcelorMittal) and other manufacturing companies as well as several thousand acres (twenty-two hectares) of farmland near Bedford Terrace where he designedAnd Built One Hundred Homes

Martinsville is a town in Hancock County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,912 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Martinsville were four men from Holland who arrived on a ship called "De Valk" in 1795. They named their new land "Hancock County". In 1814, the General David Holmes moved his family from Kentucky to Hancock County and started a store there. One of the first schools in Martinsville was established in 1815 by Rev. John Sibley. The first post office was founded in 1816 by Capt. Nicholas Fenton and later changed its name to Martinsville. In 1830, the Jackson brothers settled near present-day Martinsville and began operating a grocery store called Mercers Store which became one of the largest stores east of the Mississippi River. In 1833, they built a large log house on what is now Fourth Street and named it Fort Jackson after Governor John Fenton of Ohio who had helped them get their start as entrepreneurs. This business enterprise would continue until 1840 when they sold it to John Bailyn who renamed it Bailyn's store after himself and his son Benjamin Bailyn Jr.. The present day brick building dates back to this time and still stands today as one of Martinsville's most prominent landmarks! In 1851, $5 thousand bought out all interest in James Wickersham's dry goods store which had been open for about 25 years! This event marked an important milestone for Martinsvil
Martin'sville was an early American town in the state of Indiana. The first settler in Martin'sville was James Martin, who arrived in 1785. The town was named for Colonel John Martin, a military leader during the French and Indian War. In 1812, the Territorial Legislature changed the name to Martinsville after General Andrew Jackson. In 1814, Martinsville became a part of Lawrence County. It lost its county seat in 1824 to Merrillsburg before becoming a part of Hendricks County in 1827. It lost its county seat again in 1850 to Terre Haute before becoming a part of Vigo County in 1857.
