Michigan City is a small town in Hamilton County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,434 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–South Bend–Bloomington metropolitan area. By 1860, Michigan City had become a major manufacturing center with mills producing everything from cotton to whiskey. By the late 1800s, Michigan City had largely disappeared as a result of its decline in trade and industry. However, it retains significant remnants of its past including several extant buildings from the early 19th century that are still used today. Some of these include the Michiana Historical Museum which focuses on local history since 1794; the Michiana Landmark Museum which preserves over 100 notable structures in downtown Michigan City; and also the restored former Union Carbide facility located within walking distance of downtown that provides tours of some of Carbide's earliest operations
Michigan City was founded in 1847 by Peter K. Griggs and John A. Miller as a result of the War of 1812. It became an important trading post for the Northwest Territory during the 1850s, and later served as a center for grain production in central Indiana. In 1861, after the American Civil War ended, Michigan City became part of the new United States of America and prospered until its destruction by fire in 1892.
