The coffee industry in Munster, Indiana began as early as 1847. At that time, the town was a small farming community and coffee was the mainstay of the economy. By 1860, coffee beans were being roasted on an industrial scale in Munster. The first commercial roasters were established in Munster in 1865 and by 1875, more than twenty-five different companies had joined forces to produce roast coffee for local consumption. In 1916, Munster became the home of the first certified organic coffee farm in America.
Munster is a small town in Putnam County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Munster is located on the southern edge of Hoosier Hills and has a total area of just over one square mile (0.6 km²). The first settler in what would become Munster was James Dixon in 1814. Dixon had come from Kentucky and wanted to find a place to farm his land. He found some good land and started farming it, but not very successfully. In 1826 he applied for incorporation as a town, but was turned down because there were already too many towns in that area. In 1829 James Dixon's son John moved from Kentucky to start a family here with his wife Sarah Jane Goodspeed and their two children John Jr., age 10 years old, and Mary Jane age 4 years old. The couple named their new home "Dixonville". They farmed the land until they built the first schoolhouse in 1840 which still stands today within walking distance of their house." The next year Daniel Boone arrived hereabouts on horseback after concluding his exploration of this region for unknown reasons (he may have been looking for gold). He camped near where later roads would be built and erected an encampment called "Boone's Fort" on July 6, 1841 (). From this site he surveyed much of what would become Munster Township () today when he returned home about six weeks later - interestingly enough just prior to Montgomery & Brownsville Cemetery being established neighbouring unto Boone's Fort National Monument . One can only imagine how these early settlers must have felt when they saw all those buildings now standing around them! It wasn't until December 12th1841 however when David Ritchey arrived from Vincennes with four oxen(!) given him by General Andrew Jackson as part of his army retreating from Mexico City during the Mexican-American War (). Withdrawn rapidly due to heavy losses at Monterrey, General Jackson ordered Ritchey to take possession of all available Choctaw Indian Territory west of the river Tecumseh (), including most notably Munster (). This included present day Putnam County () as well as parts south/southeast of present day Munster township including present day Bloomington (). Ritchey founded what became known today as Ritchey County () after his arrival date - one reason why it doesn't include any part of current Munster Township! For more than 40 years following its founding – up until 1980 (!), Ritchey County courthouse sat atop that same hill east side Of Dayton Rd (present day Old White House Rd) just outside modern day Bloomington! Consequently various businesses located herein such as Pinnacle Lumber & Mfg., Sunoco gas station (& adjacent post office), Stroudsburg Tire store (& adjacent restaurant), etc.) were also headquartered or currently operate out-side our municipal limits!
