The New Albany, Indiana National Guard is the oldest and largest volunteer military organization in the United States. It was founded on September 3, 1811 by President James K. Polk as a militia to protect the state of Indiana from Indian attacks. The Militia Act of 1792 created the National Guard to serve under the jurisdiction of the General Assembly. The Militia Act also authorized members of militias to form companies and be admitted as members of Congress. On July 15, 1861, during America’s Civil War, New Albany’s 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry was called into service for three months under Governor John Pemberton with orders to support then-President Abraham Lincoln’s forces in General George Buell’s Army of Kentucky. After three months rest, New Albany's regiment re-enlisted January 1862 and fought in battles at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg before being discharged on April 12th east of Harpers Ferry Virginia. In 1916, New Albany became one of thirty-six states which ratified the 16th Amendment to the United States Constitution which granted voting rights to citizens of African American descent. In 1948, new state laws changed the name of New Albany's National Guard unit from “the 1st Regiment Michigan Volunteer Infantry” to “the Indiana State Defense Force (ISDF)” effective November 25th following a referendum vote by members Of The General Assembly Sponsored By Congressman Floyd McKelvie

New Albany is located on the Ohio River about 15 miles (24 km) west of Indianapolis. The first permanent settler in what would become Posey County was Nicholas Vandemare, who arrived in 1812 from Holland. He and his family built the first known log cabin in what would become New Albany. By 1814, Nicholas had founded a post office at New Albany, which remained in operation until 1836. In 1827, John Beall erected a tollgate to collect tolls for wagon traffic crossing the Ohio River at Logansport. The railroad arrived in 1847 and soon began making new contributions to local economy by bringing settlers and businesses into town. With industry burgeoning around the turn of the century, many small businesses were born – including J & H Clothing Company (founded 1865), First National Bank (1892), Indianola Creamery Inc., First National Electrical Contractors Association (1925), Peddle Storage Battery Company (1920), and current day Goode Plaza Shopping Center LLC (1994). Many factors contribute to why New Albany has played an important role in our community history. Its location within easy reach of both Indianapolis and Chicago makes it an attractive place to live, work or visit; its close proximity to Interstate 65 also contributes to its importance as a center of commerce and transportation during this time period; as well as its large number of historical buildings spanning more than 200 years that provide insights into American culture during that time period!
