Plainfield is located on the west bank of the White River and is bordered by Lucas County to the north and west, Hendricks County to the south, and Putnam County to the east. The land that now makes up Plainfield was first settled by European settlers in early 1800s. In 1814, General Anthony Wayne's army marched through Plainfield on their way from Memphis to invade Kentucky. The town was founded as a result of this event. By 1853, Plainfield had reached its current size and composition - it consisted of just over 1,000 residents. During much of its history, Plainfield has been an agricultural center with production including farming crops such as corn, soybeans, wheat, peas and beans; cattle; hogs; chickens; and dairy products such as cheese. Today however some commercial activities continue to take place in town including: manufacturing (including light machinery); health care (particularly medical equipment); real estate services; agriculture; retail trade (including toy stores and gas stations); restaurant/cafés; and dance clubs/nightclubs

Plainfield is a small town in central Indiana, United States. The population was 3,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lafayette, Indiana Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what would become Plainfield was Nathan Beardsley in 1785. He and his family were farmers and traders who traded with other nearby towns. By 1800, there were nine families living in Plainfield. In 1814, Daniel Boone came through this area on his way to found Kentucky; he stopped at Plainfield on his journey south. The village of Plainfield began as a small farming community near the now-demolished post office building on State Road 24 east of downtown Lafayette. The first permanent buildings were built between 1818 and 1830 by John Witherspoon and others who had relocated from Terre Haute, IN to establish a new settlement near the mouth of the White River (now called Evansville). By 1834 there were 10 residents in plainFIELD Village proper and 30 more scattered throughout its surrounding countryside. In 1835, George Washington Polk established an academy for boys located in what is now known as Old Main Street East in Plainfield Village which became one of America's leading higher education institutions for young men until it closed its doors in 1939. In 1861 Union General Robert Ewing visited this area during his campaign trail from New York City to Indianapolis; he stopping at plainFIELD Village along the way In 1865 when war broke out between Spain and Mexico over their shared Caribbean island of Dominica; members ofplainFIELD Village militia participated en route to support US forces against Mexican troops garrisoned at Monterrey; as result many homes here still bear markings from that conflict including two cannonballs found embedded within walls today! In 1870s some settlers erected a sawmill just outside present day town limits while others farmed land around it until 1893 when railroads arrived making transportation much easier than ever before essential for bringing goods into and out of this burgeoning center! That same year also saw creation of the first school district in central Indiana with three elementary schools – Hagerstown School District #1 (later renamed West Lafayette Township), Normal School District #2 (later renamed Crawfordsville) and Old IndianSchool District #3 (later renamed East Central Township) all located within easy walking distance both fromPlainFIELDVillage itself as well as neighboring villages like Terre Haute which would soon join them postwar! even though most people hereabouts continued attending church services provided by their respective village pastors until shortly after World War II ended that changed abruptly with the advent OF mass television!! everyone hereabouts suddenly lost all access video programming back then?? 😮 those days sure didn’t seem so bad did they?
Plainfield was founded in 1824 by George Washington and his family. The town was named for theplainfield of New York, where Washington had been born. The original settlers were farmers who grew corn, beans, and cattle. By 1830, the population of Plainfield had reached 100 people and it became a small town. In 1841, Plainfield became the county seat of Monroe County and the first post office in the area was opened in 1845. In 1862, when Union General Ulysses S. Grant landed at Cairo on his way to march against Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Plainfield residents came out to meet him and give him a standing ovation as he crossed their street. After the Battle of Gettysburg, many local farmers turned towards secessionism due to the high casualties suffered by Union forces. However, most residents continued to support Grant throughout the war until he resigned from service in 1865 after they were convinced that he would not pursue them vigorously enough against Confederate forces (although some did fight). After the war ended, many locals decided that they didn't want to reunite with Indiana because they felt that its Republican party wasn't supportive of their interests. They formed their own party called "The People's Party" which lasted until 1870 when it merged with another party to form what is now known as the Democratic Party of America
