In 1802, Elijah Cook began marketing his own brand of espresso beans from his farm in Lancaster County. One year later, Cook sold his business interest in Hennepin Coffee Mill to John Stephenson. At this time, Stephenson also became owner or operator of several other mills located throughout central Indiana including "New Market" (later renamed "Old Market") Mills and "Pine Hill". In February 1806, StephensonBeginning producing ground coffee under his own name at his Old Market Mills until it closed down around 1830.) In 1907, construction began on what is now Union Station in downtown Indianapolis. The first store in Plainfield was opened by Wm Silliman and Bros., just east of downtown on Main Street between bustling State and Park Streets on July 3, 1827. William Hartsgrove served as storekeeper until 1830 when he moved to Zionsville and opened a second store there before moving back to Plainfield in 1835. In 1840, George Davenport founded what would become Davenport & Company–a grocery business which continues today – with money he had saved while working for Governor Thomas Cushing during the Indiana statehood process earlier that year.
