Plymouth is a city in and the county seat of Plymouth County, Indiana, United States. The population was 7,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis–Indianapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. Plymouth was founded in 1824 by General Simon Legree and his wife Sarah Shortridge Legree as a small village on the then-unnamed Miami River. The town site was chosen because it would be adjacent to both Logansport and Fort Wayne. The first post office was established in 1830, but due to its location near Fort Wayne it did not become operational until 1837. In 1851, Plymouth became the capital of Indiana when General David Hunter made proclamation establishing that state's capital at Topeka. Plymouth experienced economic prosperity during the late 19th century through its status as an important manufacturing center for automobiles, furniture, toys and other products throughout much of central Indiana; however this prosperity ended following World War I when戦争 devastated many industrial regions in Europe. When Purdue University moved from Indianapolis to West Lafayette in 1908, it took over most of what had been done at Logansport's former cotton ginnery on land now occupied by Purdue University's old administration building (the $1 million project known as "The Great Firewall"). This left Plymouth with only one industry: agriculture; however this too changed after World War II when Purdue began producing nuclear weapons research at its new campus nearby which led to mass production of high-yield corn seeds used for ethanol production across much of North America. In recent years there has been significant investment into downtown redevelopment including a new medical center and retail development; however despite these efforts unemployment remains high and poverty persists among residents living below poverty lines

Plymouth is located on the eastern bank of the White River and on the border of Butler and Posey counties. It was founded in 1814 by General David Dixon as a stop along the Great Lakes trade route. By 1830, it had become an important center for agricultural production and served as a depot for goods moving up and down the river. The town's first school was built in 1824. In 1847, Plymouth became part of Union Township; but because it lay within Butler County, its residents were not taxed until 1861 when all towns in Butler County were made equal under state law. The post office at Plymouth was discontinued in 1892 due to growing competition from larger towns such as Merrillville and Terre Haute. The population of Plymouth grew rapidly during World War II; but by 1945 it had shrunk back to its original size due to lack of military housing available in the area. However, since then growth has resumed with residential subdivisions established near downtown and new businesses opening up around the airport which has led to increased job opportunities for local residents. In recent years there have been efforts made to revive old buildings including preservation of some historic churches and schools as well as redevelopment of some derelict or abandoned properties into mixed-use developments with commercial space available atop them
