The first people to settle in Plymouth were Native Americans who came from the area now known as Michigan. They built wigwams along the Potawatomi River. In 1812, General George Washington's army camped near Plymouth while encamped across the river at Fort Dearborn. A group of Indians led by Chief Miami set up a permanent village on their land near what is now downtown Plymouth. The first school in Plymouth was organized in 1814 and taught grades one through twelve by Mr. Fenton. In 1816, Mrs. Ann Beasley started teaching grade thirteen at Herrick School House on Main Street which became an important educational center for future generations of Plymothians.
In 1819, James Kapp bought 1/4 mile (0 km) east of present day downtown Plymouth from Chief Miami for $5 per acre (1/2 hectare). He named this tract "Kapp's Corner." Kapp developed it into what is today known as downtown Plymouth with his home being one of its earliest buildings. By 1830, he had erected a store and twenty-four homes on Broad Street between Main and State Streets; these structures remain integral parts of downtown today. Today's Central Market located adjacent to Kapp's Corner offers shoppers access to over 120 vendors selling items such as groceries, clothing and hardware products.
