Portage, Indiana is a town in central Marion County, Indiana, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Indianapolis metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Portage were John and Jane Crouch who arrived in 1799. They platted the town on land that theyshared with other pioneer families. The first post office was established in 1810 and was called "Creekville". In 1834, the name of the town changed to "Portage" after General Anthony Wayne's army invaded Indiana from Canada and destroyed Fort Dearborn near present-day Lafayette (now Lafayette). In 1848, a railroad line was built through Portage and it became an important center for trade with surrounding counties. By 1870, most of the businesses had been moved to downtown Indianapolis but some remained here until around 1910 when they were closed down by new competition from downtown Indianapolis. After World War II there was growth in manufacturing due to plentiful demand for munitions during the Cold War period; however, jobs disappeared as production shifted to more developed countries during this time period. The last major company to leave Portage was Owens Corning which left behind a large abandoned plant complex which remains one of its most visible reminders today.
